Success after IF

FET after birth of twins?

Hi ladies!

How long did your doctor suggest you wait after your successful IVF (especially with multiples) before they wanted to do an FET?
Anyone here have their snowbabies soon after twins?  What was it like?  Advice?
Mine are 4 months old (success on 1st IVF try) and we have 2 embies on ice.  Wasn't originally planning on having more, but...there they are.  Don't know if I want to get them all in there as soon as possible or spread it out.  I'm almost 34 and DH is almost 47.  Thanks!!  :)

Re: FET after birth of twins?

  • No experience with twins or IVF but did you have a csection? Are you bfing? If you had a csection, you probably need to wait a minimum of 6 months and some drs want closer to a yr. If you are BFing most drs want you wait until you wean because of medications.
Now all that being said, I completely understand the feeling of being in a hurry to get pregnant again after IF.

  • I don't have any on ice. My twins are the only two blasts out of three cycles. However, after my boys were born I did talk to my OB about the time frame for trying again and she said ideally 18 months, but she did emphasize that it would be okay if it happened earlier. Your OB and RE maybe able to give you more accurate information. Good luck!

  • Thanks, Ladies!
@jesselayne8 - I started out bfing, but stopped about a month ago bc I couldn't get production up enough.  I could've power pumped, but that was an impossibility for me while trying to take care of twins.  :)  I did have a C-section - I'm wondering about scheduling it for December or November since we've already met our out-of-pocket expenses for the year and our insurance would cover the FET.  My DH thinks we should wait until the twins are older, but I might rather have them all close together in age.  So, anyone that's had a singleton soon after twins would have a great perspective to share!

  • I do not have any frozen embryos, but my OB wanted 12 months between pregnancies- no question. She was very stern about that rule due to the risk of uterine rupture.

Truthfully, my twins are almost two and I don't feel ready for another baby. It's so much work to keep these two alive (my boys are climbers!) - I couldn't manage another! They are still big cuddlers and like to be carried, so I don't know how I'd do it with a belly or a baby. But, if you feel like you could manage- more power to you!!

  • Our situation is reversed - DS1 turned 2 a week before I gave birth to our twins (they are almost 15 months now). I didn't have a C-section, but our RE still recommended a minimum of 12 months after giving birth to DS1 before cycling again. We ended up cycling again when DS1 was about 15 months.

I am head over heels in love with all of my children, and I am so thankful for our family, but this past year has been incredibly hard. Hindsight is 20/20, but if I had it to do over again, I would probably have waited until DS1 was at least a year older, probably even 2, before getting pregnant again. I 100% appreciate wanting to have your children close together as I felt the same way (especially after receiving my DOR dx); however, 3u3 is no picnic.

FWIW, we have 1 frostie left and will most likely do a FET at some point in the future. But by "future" I mean several years from now. I wouldn't even consider trying to get pregnant again until DS1 is in school FT, and the twins are at least 3, and most likely in pre-school PT.

Good luck to you with whatever decision you make :)

  • Thanks so much for your information and perspectives!  I guess I should wait until they start crawling and getting into things before I decide whether or not they're 'manageable.'  ;)

  • We also have (had) 1 frozen embryo. I originally thought I would go back when the twins were around 1 (and I stopped breastfeeding). We kept pushing it back b/c we were so exhausted and busy! We just now decided to use it. If it works, we would be due right around the twin's 3rd birthday. I figure that I can get at least 1 of them potty trained and in a toddler bed before another baby would come (if it works). 3 in diapers would be expensive!

I know OB's usually want patients to wait at least 6 months before conceiving again after a c/s. But if the next pregnancy could be twins, they may recommend longer (bigger uterus would increase risk of rupture).

My RE definitely said that I had to be done nursing for a full 3 months before I could come back for a FET.
