TTC after 35

New to boards - question

Hi, I'm new to the boards. I'm 36 years old and my husband and I recently decided to try for a child (our first). We've been trying for approximately 6 months. The last several months, I have been using the ClearBlue Easy Digital Ovulation Test. These are the ones that detect the LH in your urine & you get a smiley face if there is a surge of LH. For the first couple months, I got smiley faces when expected, but these last 2 months, no detection at all. Now I know that I may not necessarily ovulate every month, but two months in a row?? I also haven't noticed any change in my CM either. My period last month came on time but only lasted 3 days (I normally last 4-5 days). I'm now trying to determine if I should continue with the ClearBlue Easy tests. Anyone have anything like this happen or have any thoughts? Thank you!

Have you tried temping? That would be really helpful for you so that you could see a spike in your temp to know if you O'd. A lot of the users have the fertility friend app along with the basil thermometer. Just a thought.
I'm sorry I haven't had the OPK problem. Good luck to you!

  • Welcome.  I have never used ClearBlueEasy OPK's, but have used less expensive ones so I can test 2+ x a day, perhaps you have a short surge you missed.  I also suggest temping/charting so you can easily identify your ovulation date.  Best wishes!
  • My suggestions:
    - Start tempting with a basal thermometer, and track your temps every day. Time to start charting. That way-- you can tell for sure if/when you ovulate, and get a better grasp on your fertility.
    - If you chart for 2 months and don't see any ovulation or still aren't pregnant, go see your doctor. You have already been trying for 6 months, so to try two more months will put you at the 8 month mark which is good enough timing to talk to a medical professional.

I'm sorry this is happening to you, and wish you the very best.

  • Definitely another vote for temping - it's the only was to ensure that you ovulated without going to a doctor and having a sonogram to ensure ovulation or having a blood draw to check progesterone (which obviously, I'm not suggesting....just sayin' :) )

I use the Clearblue digital Ovulation tests, but one month I used almost all of them and decided I didn't want to keep spending that kind of money. So, I bought a bunch of O tests from Wondfo on Amazon...when I get a "questionable" result (as in....just about as dark as the control line), I will confirm with a Clearblue to make sure I get the smiley face. Using the cheap tests will mean you can test multiple times a day to make sure you catch the surge. With the expensive tests, I was only testing once a day and you can easily miss it that way. Also - if your urine was diluted, the test may not have been able to detect the surge. So try to lay off liquids for a couple hours before testing or test first morning urine.

  • Agree with pp, temping is a lot if work but well worth it. Good luck
  • Welcome!  I'm 36 too and trying for my first.  Definitely temp.  It it hard to get in the habit b/c you have to temp immediately when you wake up.  I just have a digital thermometer, nothing special, and use the Kindara app, which I love!

July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April

  • Welcome!  I didn't have great luck with the ClearBlue opks, either (I got frustrated and stopped using them after 2 months).  I have had better luck with the regular pink-dye ones, because I get a fade-in and fade-out pattern that lets me know more reliably when the surge is on its way.

Unlike PPs, I'm not much of a temping enthusiast, although it's probably a good idea at least for a few months to get a sense of when you usually ovulate.  Temping after ovulation (during the 2WW), though, was crazy-making for me.

  • I have a basal thermometer & will start charting!! I know I'm supposed to temp at the same time each morning, but is that a hard & fast rule? I work 4 days a week & get up around 5:30 am. I definitely don't do that on my days off. Will that be a problem?

  • Welcome to the board, Ally1177.

For most women, the most important thing is to temp after three solid hours of sleep. I wake up at different times of the morning, but I can still identify trends on my chart. You'll probably find that you still wake up at 5:30 a.m. and automatically temp on your days off, but you'll just go back to sleep. That's fine.

Fertility Friend has a lot of great information and walk-throughs on its site: www.fertilityfriend.com.
