Pregnant after a Loss

Rubella?

I just got a call from my OB's office letting me know my bloodwork came back borderline/indeterminate for Rubella antibodies. I was immunized for MMR as a child but obviously I will need my shots updated after I give birth. For now the receptionist told me I need to avoid contact with anyone who may be infected.

My question is, I had no idea rubella was even an issue anymore? Also, am I supposed to ask people if they think they might be infected? I understand the seriousness, just not what I am supposed to do/say.

Oh gosh, I wouldn't know how to do that either. Maybe stay away from anyone who hasn't been immunized or doesn't immunize their children? I would imagine they'd be the most likely to be infected, right?

Maybe call the nurse back and ask how you're supposed to avoid such a thing. I'm curious how you could, it's not like you ask everyone you meet about immunizations!

No advice I just wanted to share my experience with you.

At my first visit for the RE I had this testing done. I also had the MMR shot as a child and in college. My results came back the same as yours! I had this shot 10yrs ago. Anyway, I had to have it again and not get pregnant for 30 days. Obviously you can't have the shot until after you give birth.

  • I had the same results. I'm not really worried about it because rubella is so rarely seen these days. I would be more concerned if I heard about an outbreak. I work in medicine and am still not too worried about exposure.

I also got not immune back as my result even though 2 years ago when I first started with a RE I was immune, my OB just told me to avoid little kids who I don't know.  This was months ago though and I just realized that I went to a 1 year old birthday party last weekend with several kids who I don't know, and now I'm kind of regretting it!  I guess if I had picked something up I would have symptoms by now?  Must remember to stay away from the kids!!

  • @Mom2anAngel2‌ thanks! The receptionist made it sound as though I should lock myself in the house to avoid being exposed and I felt stupid for thinking rubella was something that was rarely seen anymore. I was wondering how likely it was that I would even know someone or come in contact with anyone who may be infected.

That's so strange because when I lost Jack, before I left the hospital they were clamoring because my Rubella titers came back low. They made me get the vaccine before I was released. I also had the MMR as a kid and would have not even thought it to be an issue!!!

  • I'm in the same boat.  My test came back inconclusive or something like that.  I thought it was weird, though, because I have been tested for rubella about 3 or 4 times in the last year and this is the only one that came back with any issue.  Whatever.  My OB seemed not worried about it at all and just said that I will have to get a booster after I deliver.

I really have no clue on this. I did want to mention there's been a measles outbreak (slightly different than rubella) https://www.cdc.gov/measles/

the vaccine is MMR (measles, mumps, rubella). Rubella aka German measles is a different strain than what's going around right now though.
