We've only ever had family parties, but Cade's 1st birthday was Star Wars themed. Shocking right? I think this year is all about My Little Pony. I don't think we'll do a theme until Rosie gets some friends from school.
We started getting invited to his friends parties starting at 2 - daycare, gymnastics, music class. We get one or two invites a month but we only go to about half of them.
Themes I have done for my kids:
Safari - at a play place that had a safari theme so I just went with it.
Red, White, and 2 - gymnastics party at his gym.
Camping party - at the Wilderness Center
Vintage Race Car - in our backyard
Currently planning a Locally Grown party in Sept at a local apple orchard.
Friends' parties started least year- 3 year olds. Some of the kiddos invite the class to their birthday party and some don't. We have had 3 since May but a lot of his classmates were all born within a 4 month span.
DS's 1st was Cars themed with a Lightning smash cake and checkered flag cupcakes and pennants.
DS's 2nd was Pooh. I had Pooh and Piglet scene setters I found online and we had pooh cutout cookies instead of cake, honeycomb cereal, pig(lets) in a blanket, etc. There were only 2 other toddlers and one older girl but we did play an egg-hunt like game for mini honey pots with dollar store prizes. That was a total hit. I also got stickers and markers/crayons and let them decorate party hats. Not so much of a hit as DS hoarded all the stickers and crushed the hats.
He is the first in the birthdays of our friends so we've not been invited to anything else yet, but we will probably get invited to one at least.
I just had an idea for the boys' party next year lol I think we're having a traveling miniature animal farm come to our house. Mini horses and mini donkeys. I'm so fucking excited.
My daughter's first birthday in November is going to be Very Hungry Caterpillar themed and I'm pretty pumped about it. For her, and any future kiddos, I plan on only doing a big "theme/invitations/school friends and extended family" party for 1, 5, 6, 10, 13, 16...those numbers are rudimentary but basically a few elementary age parties and then only big ones for first year in the teens and sweet 16 and then the next party they get is graduation. Every other year? Family dinner only.
This was the first year I did a themed bday party for DD1 (7) and we did My Little Pony. It was a huge hit (I thank Pinterest) I did a 'Sonic Rainboom fruit tray', pin the tail on Pinkie Pie, Rarity beauty shop with fake rings and jewelry, AppleJack's snacks, and fluttershy bunny treats (veggie tray).
All the little girls had a blast and DD1 is already thinking about what her next theme will be. She wants me to do a frozen theme for DD2's 1st bday in December but that just isn't going to happen.

Re: I know we love talking about Bday parties
We did Dora for her second birthday and we did a taco bar at home. It was nice, but just family so no party favors or games.
This year we are doing Frozen. I'm just collecting ideas from Pinterest now
He has only been invited to 2 or 3 parties this year.
Probably I was very proud!
