Anxiety meds while pregnant?

Is anyone on ayny type of medication for anxiety. I've always had anxiety but wouldn't take meds for it because they made me feel tired and miserable. Lately its been getting pretty unbearable and my doctor said their are meds that are safe for pregnancy. It makes me a little uneasy thinking about taking that stuff during pregnancy but ever since my grandpa died and we decided to move I've just been a wreck. I feel like I'm just stressing out my baby.

Celexa is as good of a choice as Zoloft. More studies have been done on Zoloft, but it doesn't mean that it is more preferable.
It may take a few tries to find one that works for you.
Chat with your ob about this. It is a good idea to start medication 6 weeks prior to giving birth because it may take that long to kick in, and post partum hormones may exacerbate the anxiety symptoms. (Having the meds in your system may keep those symptoms at bay)

I am seeing a behavioral therapist which has really helped. I also saw a psychiatrist and she gave me all the pros and cons of meds. Nothing too horrific as far as side affects. Make an appt to see someone and hear your options - you don't have to make a decision until you are ready.

I am on Lexapro. In the past I hated it, but we adjusted my dose lower at the start of my pregnancy and I am so glad we did. It has worked great for me. Could you try a lower dose of a medicine you have taken before?

I take prozac and I am fairly certain without it this pregnancy would be a DISASTER. I have been taking it for about 10 years though, so I'm not sure what you would want to introduce yourself and LO to so far along in your pregnancy. Definitely talk to your doctor.

While I don't take it, I know that Zoloft is safe during pregnancy. I would definitely talk to a doctor if you feel like you need something to control anxiety.

My OB wouldn't let me take mine while pregnant. Most are considered C class drugs and so she said it is one of those situations where they have to look at how badly you need it for your health. The recommendation is to be off of them.

Most you can go back on after the baby is born, for example zoloft is safe for breastfeeding. The one I was on, viibryd, is not safe for breastfeeding because it can pass to the baby.

Make sure you have a convo with your doctor and if you plan on breastfeeding let them know so they can give you something that won't pass to the baby.

As a side note: I was on zoloft for 5 years before switching to viibryd. Little did I know that zoloft will cause you to gain weight. Something else to think about too. That was why I wanted to switch to something that was not known for causing weight gain, viibryd being one of them. But because I can't BF with viibryd I'm going to TRY to hold off on taking it after she is born OR ask to be put on something that will work for BFing and not cause weight gain.

I would definitely second the recommendation of talking to a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I am on Zoloft. I switched from Lexapro to this while ttc, at my NP's suggestion. There are risks involved, albeit slight for even Zoloft. It's a risks/benefits thing and only you and a mental health care practitioner can determine that.

I take Zoloft and have for years, and it was something I discussed with my doctor before getting pregnant. In my case, not taking medication would have been much worse for myself and my baby. It's a case-by-case situation~definitely discuss options with your care provider and I also recommend therapy. Good luck!

Thank you all for the info. I'll definetly be discussing it with my doctor better at my next appointment. I use to be on zanax and that would knock me out for 6 hours straight. Then I took Zoloft only once and I woke up feeling like id been hit by a truck. So, so far I haven't had a good experience with meds. But this was also about 4 years ago so they could have changed by now. Hopefully I can find something that works for me and LO.

Your body chemistry could b different now, especially with baby, too...I've been getting by on 50 mg of Zoloft, which did nothing for me about ten years ago, to just manage my anxiety and to stave off the awful withdrawal I go through. You might not need much of something just to help you through.

Exactly what she said ^^ my OB wasn't as comfortable with talking about anxiety ends so make sure yours is if not talk to someone else in the field and get an insight

I was on hospital bedrest for a few weeks and at my hospital the nurses and doctors were very comfortable using an anxiety pill called Visteral (so check) look into that or speak with your doctor about it . I has heavy anxiety and had many nurses and a doctor say that was what they used for many women with my same case while pregnant. Celexa is great as well but I know it can become a problem of breast feeding.

My Dr told me no to celexa but yes to Zoloft. FYI.
