Hello ladies. Any suggestions? I am one of those pregos that don't even take Tylenol. I am also unable to take my Rx migraine meds. I have had a headache for 3 days I fall asleep and wake up with it. I'm not going to the doc because he will just give me "Pregnancy safe medication" and I will not take it Please help.

Update: I went to the ob today. I called it; he prescribed Fioricet. He said with my history of past migraines it's probably best to take this. I feel horrible so I may take it.

  • If you are in that much pain, take some tylenol!!! Goodness! Take 2 tylenol and a cup of coffee/can of coke and see how you feel.

You are not helping your baby if you feel sick/miserable all the time. There is a reason why lots of studies are done on medication so pregnant women don't have to suffer.

  • I keep headaches a lot these days. My doctor told me to drink TONS of water. Headaches could be a sign of dehydration. Sometimes it helps. Sometimes I end up have to drink a coke and take some Tylenol. Sometimes I can take Tylenol when I first feel it coming and it helps it from being so bad. I hate taking medicine too, but it's better than suffering all day.
  • I am on the verge of taking Tylenol but I know it doesn't take my headaches away on any normal day that's why I was sort of thinking its pointless but I will take some. I did have some caffeinated tea but I will try more caffeine.thanks /agdbrumbelow I will try tons of water too I wasn't even thinking dehydration. I got kidney stones with my DD so extra water never hurts.

  • Sorry mobile app double posted
  • Lots of water and a can of coke. I have horrible migraines, but I've managed not to take any meds the past 20 weeks thanks to that combo. Good luck and keep us posted. If it gets worse though, you should put a call out to your doc.

Assuming you have no other medical reason...just take the tynenol. My OB is of the mindset that if you are in pain/not feeling well it could be limiting your daily activities (eating, food choices, exercise, general daily movement, etc) and that could have a greater impact on baby than a pregnancy safe tynenol (which studies were performed back when they were allowed to do testing with pregnant women).

If you are really that determined not to take pregnancy safe meds gave you considered massage, chiropractor, or a warm compress on your neck (to relieve the tension in the neck muscles)?

Also as PP said water to stay hydrated and maybe some Coke.

Take tylenol.  Have more coffee.  Neither worked for me pre-pregnancy either, but you've been "clean" for 5 months now.. I'm sure it would take the edge off.  Also, I don't know about you, but I've had major sinus congestion the last few weeks.  Saline nasal spray helps with that.  And HYDRATE.. like incredibly hydrate.

Water, water, water, and a coke (not too much, just a can to start with)
A cold rag on the back of your neck and putting your feet in hot water usually helps too.
Elevate your head when you're laying down or sleeping. Not just your head but your head/neck/upper back. I use a bunch of pillows.
If its sinus related do all the above and add in some hot decaf tea. Mint, peppermint, anything warm and herbal. Licorice root tea works great to drain your head, but it doesnt taste too good so mix with honey.
I have script for headaches but it knocks me out for a day I hate taking it, so I've learned how to manage a lot of the headaches without meds.
  • Thanks ladies I broke down and took Tylenol didn't do much but took edge off I have a cool mist humidifier I will use that tonight. Thanks for the ideas.
  • Tylenol sinus helps me.  You could be dehydrated, in which case caffeine could be counterproductive.  You also need to check your BP.  A headache can be a sign of high BP.

I don't understand the logic behind refusing to call your doctor.  Asking strangers on the internet makes way more sense :)

  • My 20 week apt is tomorrow and I will be bringing it up but I just wanted med alternatives to see what works for others.

Make sure it isn't blood pressure related!! I would definitely call the doc and at least let them know. Multiple day headaches are not normal.

I second the Gatorade and hydrate route. Also, double your protein intake. If it feels more like a sinus headache, you can take a benedryl (on the preg-safe list) and see if it helps.
  • Ditto on the Gatorade. I give DH a hard time for drinking it because it's full of artificial junk ... But it helped. So I drink it if I'm desperate.

  • @dianeg1017‌ I had a KILLER headache on Monday. I went to bed with it on Sunday and then had it all the next day. I don't take any Tylenol either, so I just started chugging ice cold water. I drank about 4.5 liters that day and woke up fresh as a daisy the next. I think I was wildly dehydrated, because even as I drank all that water, I didn't pee a lot. Now, you may not need to drink 4.5 liters or anywhere near that much, but maybe you should push some liquids and see how you feel.

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice. I have my 20 week appointment in about an hour with the ob so I will be talking to him about it it's well. I have upped my water intake and broke down and taken Tylenol and went to my chiropractor but this bugger is still hanging in there. I will update later after I see what he says.
  • If your headache is bad enough, you will end up taking "pregnancy safe medicine", trust me. At 14 weeks I had a five day migraine that ended me up in the ER. All because I refused to take Tylenol in the early stages. Instead, I suffered for days on end until I could not function, open my eyes or even eat. Instead I ended up with two doses of morphine and a steroid. Take the approved stuff now so you don't end up getting the questionable drugs.
  • Take the fiorcet! It is the only thing that helps my headaches. I try not to take it often, but since I have the fiorcet I actually haven't had to take any Tylenol (which wasn't helping anyway).

  • I have avoided medication but I have had terrible a headache and treated it with Tylenol and caffeine and worked wonders. Why wait and tourtière yourself?

I did I held out all day. I figured why stay up half the night with a headache when I can just take one and go to bed. Now I am headache free. Ahhh feels so good. I can think.
  • I am so glad you took it. Constant headaches are the worse. I have had daily headaches since about 8 weeks. I've only taken 4 fiorcet in that time (when the headaches were unbearable) and they would really help. Thankfully I've been headache free the last 3 days! I feel like a new woman. Hope your headache stays away!

  • I'm a former non-believer in oils, but now I can't live without my dose of peppermint and lavender oils when I feel a headache coming on. It works for me and if for some reason I still can't kick the headache, I down Tylenol like my life depended on it.
