Propylthiouracil (PTU) While Pregnant

Anyone else have hyperthyroidism and taking ptu while pregnant? I have an appointment with my endocrinologist tomorrow and really want to talk to her about getting off this med.... I just hate taking medication while pregnant. Just wondering if anyone was in same boat and if you planned to breast feed if you still have to take it after birth?

    No experience with this particular med but I am on certain unavoidable meds now and although I hate it, as soon as I got pregnant I weighed the options with my doctor of taking vs. not taking and the risks were too high for me to discontinue. 

    Does your OB know you are taking this? Is it recommended you stop? What has been told to you so far about taking this medicine while pregnant?

    Yes my OB knows I am on it. It's D classified. I found myself reading about it online and just hate having to take it. Just curious if anyone else was taking the same thing/any natural things to try to improve thyroid function. Thanks!

    It is a cat D drug, there is evidence of fetal harm. I would discuss with your dr about stopping or reducing the dose if possible.

    It is preferred over methimazole for BF. The American Thyroid Assoc recommends the infants thyroid function be monitored regularly.

    I have been on meds since before pregnancy and under care of both my ob and endocrinologist. The good news is I am only on 50mg a day. Hopefully my numbers are good tomorrow and she will begin to entertain letting me take some time off. I guess I am just having one of those days that I feel bad for having to take meds even though the benefits have outweighed the risks. Thanks for the feedback as always!

    I have had Graves for 10 years. The doctor switched me to PTU right when I found out I was expecting too. After one month, I was able to come off all thyroid meds! For the first time in 10 years! The baby actually "cured" my Graves disease. Hang in there!
