Trying to Get Pregnant

T&P's for a different kind of pregnancy

I am breeding my dog today! She is a Great Dane! We are doing an intrauterine insemination with 19 year old frozen semen!!! We bred her once before and found out it didn't take the same week I miscarried. It sucked. We found out the semen we were given was a bad batch and the stud owner new and was selling it anyway. I was pissed, because breeding a dog costs a pretty penny. Id love some good thoughts that everything goes smoothly today and she has puppies in two months. And pray I don't go crazy because with dogs it's a 4 week wait and I can't even handle my two week one!

Re: T&P's for a different kind of pregnancy

  • Good luck! What CD is she? I breed English Springer Spaniels. Or did. My dam had her third and final litter in March. I am sure we will do it again someday but I know I won't have the time to properly devote to raising a litter in the next couple years. I am also not willing to breed her again because she is my baby too. I had 4 puppies placed before we even bred this last time. We had a litter of 6. All healthy. I was extremely excited that 4 of the puppies went to homes with special needs family members.

  • She is on cycle day 16. Since we are using frozen semen we had to wait three days after she ovulated to breed her. We are breeding her tomorrow as well!

Funny you say this because after we bred her last time I had a dream she had a huge litter and I had to help her nurse them.

  • Good luck! I wish I had room for a Great Dane puppy.
  • I love Great Danes!!!!!!! Good luck with everything :)

When I am ready for a puppy, I'd like to get a Great Dane from a reputable breeder. About how much do the puppies go for? (Just out of curiosity)

Great Danes from a reputable breeder with all the health checks are between 1500 and 2000 dollars. At least that's what they go for in California. Usually the breeders will show for conformation as well. Great Danes are the best!

If this is not a financial amount you are able to pay, there are Great Dane rescues. You can still get a registered, intact puppy through them. Most often people do not do proper research and realize at about 8 months that they are in over their head. A reputable breeder should also have a network of families, foster homes and rescues. I have placed three dogs that were not my own by this networking. People call interested then find out the cost of a registered, raised underfoot pup and get disappointed. I then direct them to a foster family or rescue. I have conducted the interviews as a liason between these prospective owners and the rescue.

Great Dane Rescues are a great option, I still suggest health testing because Great Danes can come with a ton of very expensive problems. All rescue Danes have not come from reputable breeders. And even reputable breeders can produce dogs with health issues. It's always important to know the breed and potential health issues you may encounter and know what you are prepared to handle. Many breeders require that you return a dog to them if you can no longer care for it and the breeder will place it. This is also an option as well.
