How to get DD to drink more clear fluids

Since the hot weather has come, DD is having a problem with constipation. We are giving her miralax as well as giving her more high fiber foods. However, the only thing she wants to drink is milk which I think is adding to the issue. I have tried just giving her a cup of milk in the morning and then giving her a choice of diluted juice or water, but then she just doesn't drink anything for the rest of the day. She HATES juice. Water she will drink some of it I put ice cubes in it.

Any suggestions on ways to get more water or diluted juice in her? I just want to keep her bowels moving.

  • Oh, and she will only drink a few sips of water here and there despite it being the only choice. (I do not give in.) I want to give some more fluids in her system!

  • Thanks...I will give it a shot! I have a minnie mouse tumbler that she covets. Maybe I will put water in that and see if she will drink it!

  • New cups, straws, etc. High water content foods: fruit, Popsicles, applesauce pouches, veggies, WW pasta. Watermelon is great for hydration. Avoid dry foods. Drink water yourself. LOs like to do what we do. Have a tea party with water. Let her drink bath water--my DD loves that. It sounds kinda gross, but I don't think there's any harm in it.

  • If you want her to accept juice or dilute juice (I recognize this could be useful at time), you could try spiking her ice water with it, a tiny bit at a time.  Good luck, I know how frustrating it is.  I have extremely picky kids and DS1 is on spectrum and only drinks milk.  You might wait on this to see if you can get her doing better with pure ice water first.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I would take anything at this point. Right now she is refusing to drink much of anything other than milk. It made for a very tough time this winter when she had a pretty bad cold and I was told to avoid dairy. And of course I am trying to help the constipation problem with more water rather than milk!

  • Maybe try making ice pops for sucking on?  Like sticking popsicle sticks in ice cube trays? Granted, it's not going to get a lot of fluid at once, but maybe help along the way.

  • Have you tried "tea"?  The first time we took LBB to a Chinese restaurant he was fascinated by everyone drinking the tea and wanted some for himself.  So we started giving him warm water in a little bowl that looks like those teacups in Chinese restaurants.  It's just water, but he feels like he's drinking something special.  You could probably also give her some herbal teas, but I honestly don't know if there are any issues with kids and herbal stuff.

  • Try lemonade or adding flavor to the water, like those MIO flavors. My DD loves Gatorade too.

  • I would absolutely not let her drink bath water as PP suggested...soap can cause serious digestive issues.

Well, both my kids went through bath-water-drinking phases, and they have survived.  My point, really, is to include water in playful activities where LO may be inclined to explore, including drinking.  That may lead to LO being more interested in drinking water at other times.
