Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Bumbo seat

I've tried to put my 4 month old in his seat a few times and he seems really uncomfortable. He is 18 pounds already (turns 4 months officially on Saturday). His legs seem too big for the seat and get pinched. Should I give up and sell this thing or do you think we might be able to use it at some point? We also got the sit me up floor seat which seems roomier for his chunkiness.

Both of my DD's were unable to sit in the seat due to chunk a monk legs. I gave mine to a friend who has a petite baby and she loved it. We stick to open chairs nothing that is body hugging.

My little guy HATES the Bumbo - he's 20 lbs at 5 months, and we can't even wedge him into it anymore. I say sell it.
  •  I wish I would of seen this earlier! I also recieved the bumbo and my little chunk's legs are sooo snug in it (hes 4 months and 16 lbs) just looked up the Mamas and Papas...looks like I might try that out..
  • i thought those were recalled???
  • I got the megaseat which has wider leg openings and, from what I've read, more stable than the bumbo.  My son isn't quite ready for it yet  (head isn't stable enough) so I don't have feedback on it but thought I would mention it.

Yep they were but they can choose to still sell them.

They are actually banned in Chicago 'a children's hospital

They were recalled a few years ago, and the remedy was safety strap kit.  All new Bumbos are sold with the safety straps.   But really, the injuries to children were occurring because people weren't following the directions in the first place.  The Bumbo is a FLOOR seat, and not for use on elevated surfaces (like as a booster seat, or on a table or countertop).  It's also not meant to be used without close parental supervision.  Babies were falling out of the Bumbo seat while on an elevated surface, and getting hurt from the fall.   Leave the Bumbo on the floor and don't leave the baby unsupervised, and there is no safety issue.

Just wanted to add that the initial run of the bumbo seats actually had a picture of a baby in the seat on a table. They have since changed the picture on the box too.

  • I used the bumbo a couple of times with LO, shes now 18 pounds at 4months as well and she does not like it because chunky legs are squeezed and she can't move. I donated tho.
  • We have a Prince Lionhart (sp?) He seems to fit in it, but doesn't really care for it.
Pregnant with #3, after thee, three's complete!!
  • Bumbos are no good. My LO's legs were too chubby also. We use a Ingenuity to sit in when she eats but that's about it. :)
  • Bumbos are pointless. I tried feeding my first in one and that literally lasted maybe three times. They can still wiggle and fall and never seem to sit up right in it. By the time they are sitting on their own they are way to big of it. Total waste I would get rid of it

  • I just got the Summer Infant Activity Seat because I was unable to use the bumbo. It was cheaper than the bumbo and comes with a great toy tray for baby to interact with. Wish I would have bought that initially!
  • I was gonna get one for my DS4 but after reading this post I changed my mind. He has big ol' legs too. At his 4 month checkup he was 18 pounds. He's just now 5 months and 1 week old and has stable head control so I've just been doing it the cheap way by putting 3 pillows around him. Seems to be working just fine.
