Working moms- napping at daycare

For you working moms out there, how are your LOs napping at daycare? My LO has been at daycare for one month and has been napping like crap getting 3- 30 minute naps and being up for 2-3 hours at a time (at home I can tell she is tired after 90 minutes). I've spoken to her teacher about my concerns but it's not getting better- wondering if I'm not alone out there when it comes to this......

Re: Working moms- napping at daycare

  • You are not alone, and it's not just daycare. My MIL watches DS and he still has a similar situation... 3 very short naps and up for 2-3 hours at a time. He just won't nap no matter what she does! And he doesn't nap much better for me either.

  • My kid never napped at day care really until she went back when she was older. It sucked.

My kid is a great napper at home.  I'm worried about his nap quality when he goes to daycare :(
  • Glad to hear I'm not alone- it does suck! I've been trying to enjoy morning time together since when she gets home she's sleeping or eating or crying! My LO isn't the best napper for me but at least was getting about 4 hours of daytime sleep versus the 2 hours she gets at daycare!!!! For some reason I thought she might do better at daycare since they are professionals!
  • A lot of times they do! And when my kid went back when she was older she did nap better there (and still does) but when she was a baby forget it.

  • My LO just started yesterday, but she has never gotten more than a total of 2 hours for the day, which is way less than what she is used to. I hope just over time she will get better with her naps....I can't imagine it's easy sleeping with crying babies in the background!
  • Same problem here, he will wake at 6:30 and get to say care around 8, and won't get a nap til 10 or so. But I think he sleeps for 15 min on the way there so that screws things up. And in the afternoon, my MIL who works at the day care goes home around 2-3 and takes him with, and that's right around nap time so he misses that one and is awake from 12 or 1 til 5:30! Today DH asked them to try laying him down every couple hrs and at least letting us know the effort. At least that way we know it's him and not them. My MIL is the main problem in the afternoon but that's a whole other ball game there.
  • I have an hour commute. So sometimes she gets that nap.

My LO is in a home with just a couple kids so gets lots of one on one time. She reports nice naps and says she's really good at communicating her needs.

I think all things the same no two babies will have the same sleep habits at daycare. Hopefully they get used to the new place and settle in for longer naps.
  • I go back to work in two weeks and this is what I'm afraid of! Not to mention the fact that DS currently won't fall asleep on his own. Trying not to stress... Sigh...

  • This is my fear as well since I go back to work in 2 weeks also. This is also why I have been trying to do less things to soothe LO to sleep during naps bc I'm sure at daycare it's pretty much lay them down and leave the room. I'm worried that its going to be really rough on her

Same! Going back on Monday. Even though DH will be taking care of LO for a few weeks before daycare I'm so scared the routine we established is going to get thrown off.

DS starts daycare on Monday and I already have no hope for naps. He is so difficult to get to sleep in the day time and add the other kids in the mix...I'm probably going to be picking up an overtired kid every day.

  • It really depends on the day with Aiden.  Some days he gets three one hour naps, some days he only cat naps, some days he takes a 2.5 hour nap! He's always been a pretty lousy napper, so I figure I'll take what I can get, and on the bad days its an earlier bedtime!

  • My Lo's naps at daycare suck. So I feel awful whe I get home and all she wants to do is sleep. Hopefully when they get a little older it'll be better.

  • DD is at daycare for 9 hours. She takes an hour nap in the morning and a 30 minute nap in the afternoon. At home she'll sleep much more than that.
  • Today marked 1 month since I have been back to work and he only just started taking decent naps (1.5-3 hours) this week. LO probably just needs more time to adjust- baby and teacher need to learn each other. I had my concerns about DSs teacher in the beginning (and I addressed them with the director) but I am very happy with how far she has come with DS now. When I pick him up she is always so excited to tell me about how well he is doing and the new things she is trying with him.

Thank you for sharing - gives me hope that they can and will adjust!

  • I have the opposite problem. My LO never stays asleep at home for naps and the sitter (in home daycare) says she sleeps a couple hours at a time?! She must be a baby whisperer.
  • LO has been napping really well at daycare. I was surprised! He usually naps at least 4-6 hours in the 9 hours he's there.

  • DS takes a 2 hour nap in the morning, a short nap mid-day and a 2 hour nap in the afternoon at daycare. At home, I'm lucking if I can get an hour each time.

  • I am curious to see how DS will nap at daycare.  I go back to work in less than 3 weeks and he still needs to be swaddled to go down for a nap in the crib.  At daycare he won't be allowed to be swaddled so that will throw him off right there.  Not to mention being in a strange place with a stranger taking care of him.  I hope he adjusts quickly and I don't have a cranky, overtired baby on my hands at the end of every day.  At least I have a 30 minute commute with him at the end of the day so he will most likely get a little nap in there to recharge him for a bit before we are home.

  • My LO took a 2.5 hour nap at daycare today.... She hasn't had a nap that long weeks! It was in the swing instead of her crib but I'll take it!
