Painful Letdown

edited July 2014 in Breastfeeding
Hi ladies!  I haven't been around since I weaned DS1 at 13 months.  I'm now nursing DS2, who is 3 weeks old, and I'm looking forward to participating a little bit again!  For now, I have a question I'm hoping someone can help with.

For the last 2-3 days I've been having quite painful letdown (deep breast tissue, not in my nipples) in both breasts, with red "stripes" on my left breast.  I have had clogged ducts in the past, but really don't think I've had any recently.  No episodes of engorgment.  No fever or muscle aches.  No breast/nipple pain aside from during letdown.  LO's mouth/my nipples do not look yeasty. Any thoughts?  Do you think this still warrants a call to the Dr?  I've been planning to give it a few days, but if it could be mastitis even without the other symptoms, I don't want to let it get worse!

Thanks in advance!

Re: Painful Letdown

  • I found my letdown to be much more intense with DD than it was with DS. Maybe it just gets more noticeable and intense with each subsequent baby??

  • Sounds like mastitis. I would call to be safe, you've already been suffering for a few days.

I got my first clogged duct today and I don't want to even move. Can't imagine how much worse you must feel.
