Safety gates and pets

So in just a little while we will all start to think about safety gates being set up and I'm wondering what you ladies with pets will be doing.
I want to put a gate between my living room and kitchen, which would cut off the living room from the rest of the house. My question is, how would you deal with pets in this situation? My dog likes to roam the house. If I leave her on one side, she's cut off from the family in the living room, if she's on the other, she doesn't get to sit in her favorite places.
I know there's really nothing I can do I have to choose one or the other, but I was just wondering what you guys were thinking if you are in the same situation.

Re: Safety gates and pets

  • We have this. It's super convenient. ..and we've been training the dogs with it, so they get used to it.

  • I'm with Lala - you really don't need a gate. We had one at the top of our stairs for a bit but ended up just taking it down and teaching DD to use the stairs safely, and that was that. We won't be using one with DS.

  • We are also a No Gate Family. We have 3 separate staircases in our house and our kids need to know how to climb stairs safely -- this only comes with practice! Yes, we have to be super villigent for a while, but the payoff is a kid who can confidently navigate most any landscape.

When we really needed to keep DD out of places as a crawler, we used one of those hexagonal play yards.

  • Eh, I just reread my comment and I didn't really answer your Q at all ;) If you want to use gates, I'm assuming your dog will whine when he or she wants to cross through the gate -- just as your pet does when he or she wants to go outside... I'd just let him or her through the gate at those times!

  • I only used a gate to keep the dogs from going down the hallway to DS1 bedroom and waking him up. We had a walk through one and just left the door open to walk back and forth unless we needed it closed.
  • We have one gate that is only up part of the time. It separates our laundry room from the rest of the house. Most of the time during the day its down, we really actually got it for our dog, he sleeps in the laundry room at night or when he is wet/muddy from rain. But it will serve as a barrier to keep DD out of there once she is mobile since all our cleaning products are in there. I guess my answer doesn't help much. But that is what we are doing.

  • I am progressively removing the gates from my house. I'm seeing it as a personal challenge to de clutter my house. Gates don't really seem to be much of a deterrent for my daughter. When she was 12months old I found her sitting on top of our 6" tall book shelf. Surprise! So don't expect gates to fix things or keep kids safe.
