Ok I know there have been a lot of these but DH and I have been debating over the spelling of our girl's name. If you saw this name, how would you pronounce it? - Eiley
What is the origin of this name? Is there a more common spelling?
We want to name her Reily without the R, so it's pronounced eye-lee. DHs grandpas middle name is this, but spelled Iley (ILEY). I don't love the spelling because when it is typed it looks like two Ls at the beginning. If anyone has other suggestions to a not-confusing spelling, I'm all ears! We really love the name but I am in the camp of unique names, simple spellings. I don't want there to be a question about pronunciation.
Ahh ok. I'm a fan of honor names, but this is a tough one. I think that with that name she's just always going to have to spell it, since it's not a traditional name at all - and coming up with a simple spelling will be difficult.
I really like the idea of changing the name to be more feminine/match a traditionally spelled named. Isla is a great choice - very similar!
Let's not bash her name choice she said its a family name. What about adding a letter to the beginning like Eilee or Ailee or Eiley or iylee that avoids the double Il look

Thanks for your suggestions! Truth be told, every time someone says they've never seen/heard or it makes me love it more. I really think it's a beautiful name and DH and I agree on that, we're just struggling with how to spell it!

I haven't really seen anyone on this thread bashing the name choice. I don't think it's unfair to worry about a name that is made up (even if it is a variation of a family name). Asking internet strangers is actually a great way of vetting a name - people will be very honest with you in a way that family/friends sometimes won't.
Ailey is a traditional Gaelic name pronounced i-lee
I can't find anything online about the name Ailey being a traditional Gaelic name. I tried Behind the Name, Baby Name Wizard, Nameberry and then some searches of Gaelic and Irish names on the interwebs. I'm actually kind of into Irish names (Aoife, Neave - I swoon), and I had never heard this one.
I found the name quite quickly with a google search of "girl name Ailey." I think this is the spelling you should go with, though. The other spellings definitely seem made up.
Edited to add that it is pronounced AY lee so I guess Eye-lee maybe doesn't exist, lol!

When I found the pronunciation it say AY as in 'side.' So think of it as "Ay ay, captain!" instead of how 'way' sounds.
I like the name. It sounds very unique, but still pretty. I think spelling it Eilee makes it the easiest to figure out and pronounce the way you like it. I like the way Ailey looks, but again the pronunciation would be tough cus I would pronounce Ailey as Aye-lee. ( like saying the letter A then lee). Where as I personally would see Eilee and think of Eileen without the "n" and say "eye-lee". ETA-I also like Isley which a PP mentioned. It looks different from what you were thinking-but seems to be pronounced the same. And it reminds me of Isla Fischer the actress. Who is lovely!
Either way u spell it, you may have to correct people sometimes...and if you love the name, that won't matter so much. Let us know what you decide!
