January 2013 Moms

Moms with EI experience, come on in.

So as you know Thoren is established with Early Intervention here in Texas, and his speech and occupational therapists have been god sends, but now with the move so close we have had to suspend service until we move. My question is, have any of you experienced trouble getting your LO reestablished with a new EI program? We have a full copy of his records and eval scores, hard copy in hand, and our local EI will also send a copy ahead of us if necessary, so we are covered there, i am just wondering if we will have to go through the whole initial screening process again. Also, how was the transition for your LO? DS takes a long time to warm up to people and he adores his speech therapist (though he thinks his occupational therapist is the devil), so i am worried that this is going to be hard on him. New people and situations overwhelm him a lot, and i know this move is going to be hard on him, i just want to try and make it as seamless as i possibly can for his sake.

Re: Moms with EI experience, come on in.

  • @chilibeansm0m - They are state funded here, as well as in WA so that is a bonus for sure. There is a sliding payment scale that depends on income, so on our current income we were paying $3 dollars a month for his services, and from what i have gathered it will be similar there. I have contacted them to set up the first appointment and eval, and that will happen the week we get there. I feel like i am rushing him a bit, but the longer he goes without services, the more of an impact i fear it would make. It took him about 6 weeks to fall head over heels for Miss Julie, he never warmed up to Lisa at all. He hides from her.. :/

  • I wouldn't worry too much about your LOs adjustment - these guys tend to be pretty resilient, and that will be the easy part.

The harder part is definitely the processes and hoops to jump through. I assume you're moving between states, right? We moved within the same state, but different counties -- and still had to switch as our programs are county-run. Even then, we were without actual services for 6-8 weeks. The transfer process was SLOW, and they had processes in place to manage in-state transfers.

I think you're doing the right thing getting the ball rolling in your new area ASAP. You will likely need a new evaluation, unless they are the same program (i.e., Help Me Grow in Ohio). Otherwise, I suspect they will have to check their own state's boxes from the start. :( I could be wrong, but in my experience, the processes and paperwork via these programs is mindboggling.

GL -- but, I would definitely err on the side of being overly proactive, which it sounds like you're already doing!
