Cooing at 3 mos?

Hi - I used to check in on the May 2014 BMB but my baby was actually born in April. I posted this to the 3-6 mo board, but was curious in getting other's opinions here too.

When did your babies start cooing/making sounds? My baby turned 3 months last week, and we really don't hear much out of her except for some loud 'yelling' every once in a while and a cough sound here or there when she laughs. When I look in those darn milestones books, it says this should happen by 2-3 months. Ease my fears! This is my second, and my first child was cooing up a storm by this age.

  • Every baby develops slightly differently and the milestones provided are just guidelines. If you have a concern, call your pediatrician.

Mine has been cooing for awhile, though I can't remember exactly when. I think around 7 weeks old? But anyway each baby develops differently and I'm sure a lot of it is personality, too. Maybe your baby prefers to just watch and take in what's around him rather than try to interact.

  • Depends. Ds didn't really coo much at all, but he started talking early. Dd has been cooing for what feels like forever and she's only 3 months old now. Every kid is different

  • With DD1 she never made noises. We were afraid she was deaf and dumb. She began talking a few months ago after turning 2. DD2 "talks" and coos a lot she's 15weeks.
  • This one coo'd around 6 weeks. I don't think my other two really ever did. Based on what you said about the yelling and laughing I don't think you have any reason to worry. All babies are different.

  • I know I need to get it in my hard head that every baby is very different. I think it very much could be that this one is * quiet *. Also .. it being my second and as she is SUCH a good baby, I feel like this poor baby is always getting put down on the play mat, in her crib, etc. b/c I'm doing so many other things. She got a lot of 1-1 time when I was on maternity leave, but maybe I just didn't talk to her enough. I'll sit tight until our 4 mo appt and see what they say. I did call my pedi today and she asked about her hearing - which she seems to startle at noises - so we will see.

  • No cooing here.  The only time he "talks" is when he's building up to getting upset. He has his Dad's positive outlook on life ;)

I just want to say I worry about the exact same thing.  My LO is cooing (mostly when we are in his room alone and I get right in his face when he's on the changing table...maybe try that), but having a 2.5 yr old to take care of makes me feel like this LO doesn't get nearly as much talking/ playing time.  I feel so bad about it.  This LO is so content and happy, which almost makes it worse bc he doesn't demand attention like my toddler would have when she was a baby.  I just tell myself that there are millions of successful second children in the world and he will be okay.

  • This LO has been making noises from about 2 months. Lately he is fully enjoying squawking like a bird. My first was quiet for a long time. I remember being worried at 6 months that she had never really coo'd. However, she is now very verbal at 2.5. I guess I'm saying that being vocal or not at 3 months doesn't seem to necessarily mean much down the road.
  • DS coos now at nearly 3 months but my SO didn't speak until he was 5 & he's an intelligent guy... so I wouldn't worry too much!
  • My DD didn't start cooing until about 15 weeks. (She was born 4 weeks early... Not sure if that's why she started cooing so late. )
  • We had a few noises early on, and then that all went away and LO was very quiet. He just started talking up a storm last Saturday and he was 16 weeks at that point. I wouldn't worry!
