I am swaddling and he is sleeping for 9-10 hours at a time but wondering when to stop swaddling or if it isnokay to keep swaddling past the time when they are able to self soothe. I know he isnt self soothing yet but i dont want him to be dependent on swaddling. Anyone else swaddling ?? Without the swaddle he startles and wakes many times and doeant sleep more than 30 mins at a time.

I'm still swaddling. She startles herself awake if I don't.

  • Swaddling needs to stop when they can roll over.

I'm in the same boat as you. She will sleep overnight for ten or so hours swaddled. If I ditch it, sometimes she does well and other times shes up on the hour startling herself awake. Not looking forward to kissing that thing goodbye.

  • We didn't stop swaddling until she could roll.  It was an easy transition when it got to that point.

  • I'm swaddling with one arm out, next week I'll try both arms out. Only doing it because at day care they can't swaddle, only use sleep sacks. I don't think he's really noticed a difference....

  • I swaddled DD until she could roll. At that point she became a stomach sleeper and continued to sleep great. There really isn't a rush. I swaddle at home for all sleep even though they cannot swaddle at daycare. I rather him get good sleep any chance he can.

Woombie makes a swaddle with sewn in bumpers for babies who roll over so they can't..we use a basic woombie for his long afternoon nap but got him that one so we have it for when he starts to roll. One night we out him down not swaddled and he's been fine so ever since we don't swaddle him for his long sleep :) just keep trying randomly and one day it'll just happen I'm sure!

  • We are still swaddling but LO is only 9 weeks old. With DS1, we swaddled until 4 months. But we did a very gradual "un-swaddle" with him, started with one arm, then both, and he still slept in a sleep sack. It was rough for a couple nights then calmed down. Hoping the transition is just as smooth with this baby but there is no way to know.

  • I, too, have already started to do some transitional stuff because daycare doesn't allow arms-in sleep sacks or swaddling. Trying to get him to nap without it and last night we swaddled him with one arm out. So far it has worked out okay. Will try to put him to bed without his swaddle if tomorrow's one-arm-out experience was like today's.
