Solids, a clicky poll question

I feel like the only one not on solids yet! Our pedi said C wasn't ready when she saw him last and suggested that we wait until 6 mos. Have you started solids and when did you do it?
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

  • C is also one of the younger babies on our board so it feels like it's taking forever and yet he's growing up so fast! How is that possible??

  • No solids here, I'm waiting until 6 months like I did with ds. I don't mean this in a snarky way at all but I'm not really sure what the rush is with introducing them. Is there a particular reason people are starting already?

  • I know you aren't the only one, there was a discussion somewhere about it. Ive done some purees here and there but I'm not seriously feeding her any foods at this point.

  • I know some folks started with cereal because of reflux and others had weight issues which totally makes sense.

    The recommendations are all over the place, even from doctors. I have a friend whose baby is 9 months and she asked me if the Dr. had me putting cereal in the bottle yet. I was like "wha?? no...C doesn't have reflux." She seemed shocked because her Dr had her do it at 4 months "to get baby used to it."

    :-O

    @greenbunny79 I don't have an exersaucer, either.

  • @greenbunny79 - Hey soul sister, ain't that mister mister on the radio?

    @mamajop - that makes sense!

    No judgement here towards anyone, just curious and feel like the only one not on the solids bus.

    Also, I just figured out how to do poll because lame. Now it's gonna be all polls all the time! And since I love charts, I may just have to chart them!!   :-B

  • We had weight issues so the pedi suggested cereal on the earlier end (she was just over 4 months) to try and get some extra cals in her.

  • We started oatmeal for fun around 5 1/2mo. She will be 6mo next week, and is an oatmeal pro. We are waiting til her appt to start anything else per pedi's recommendation at 4mo.

  • We waited until 6 months.
  • Pedi gave hs the go-ahead at 4months. We didn't start right away but didn't wait as long as we'd planned either. When she was trying to grab our food to put in her mouth and watching our every move while we ate, we thought she might be ready. She definitely was. She only gets one meal/day right now, while we eat dinner. After 6months I will start giving her more.

  • We are waiting until 6 mos (which isn't for about 3+ wks). At our 4 month appt the pedi mentioned it, but said there isn't much point before 6 mos, so we're waiting to discuss again at that appt. Plus, it's summer and we go away a fair amount, so it's one less thing to cart around when we travel.
  • not yet here, either. reflux flare up and food allergies put us on a different schedule so we have to wait until 6 months. we're starting with sweet potatoes/carrots/squash instead of cereal or oatmeal.

    @greenbunny79‌ - correct, if family member is allergic, you would want to talk to your pedi before starting.

    DS1 had an egg reaction, so we'll hold off on eggs until talking to pedi at next appointment.

  • I chose no, at 6 months, she was 5 months on Saturday. However, we have started rice cereal because she was showing signs of readiness. After 4 days I was feeling adventurous and thought we'd try avocado. Within a few hours she had hives all over her chin. I felt awful, I talked to our pedi and he said to hold off on everything else until 6 months.
  • I should mention, we have no family history of food allergies. So far she is allergic to dairy and avocado.
  • We started cereal at 4mo and will start others at 6mo. This is per our pedi, though LO is showing other signs of readiness.

  • The latest evidence debunks the idea that introducing early causes good allergies. So please let yourself off the hook for any guilt!

  • We just started about four days ago, and he's just shy of 6 months. I'm really glad we waited. With DD, I started the second I got the go-ahead from the pedi. She still had a strong tongue thrust, and was sitting pretty wobbly, and every feeding was a mess that hardly even got any food in her. This time, it took Logan all of five minutes to figure out what we were doing, and he is able to open his mouth for the spoon, swallow, and generally stay cleaner.
  • I waited until 6 months... my pedi said I could do 5, but since LO was born a month early I figured waiting wouldn't hurt him. I'm glad I did because when I started he was SO ready. He loves, loves eating. Maybe he would've at 5 months too, who knows!

  • We tried a couple things at about 5.5 months, and now that he's 6 months, are giving them more regularly.  I'm still lazy about it, but he gets them.

    We're also on the younger side of the board (just turned 5 months yesterday), and I voted waiting until 6 months, so it'll still be a while.  Our pedi generally recommends to wait if the baby is EBF, so no rush.

  • We started around 5 months per our pedi's recommendation, and now (at 6 months) do 3 "meals" per day. At 5 months she basically just spit everything back at us, but now she's actually eating.

    Meals usually involve oatmeal and a fruit or veggie. She loves them -- if she hadn't been interested, I would have slowed down and not forced the issue. But sometimes it feels like she actually prefers solids to her bottles - like she'll refuse a bottle, but then eat an entire serving of oatmeal and still want more.

    That being said, every baby is different, and there's absolutely no rush to get them eating solids IMO. I hate that you feel pressured!

  • We're waiting until 6m and signs of readiness. LO is middle of the pack in terms of age (mid-Feb) so another 2wks+ until she's 6m. However, she's just getting to sit well without support for more than about 5seconds and still has a bit of tongue thrust so physically, she's not showing signs of readiness just yet either.

    And to be totally honest, it's partially laziness because solids = messy baby with gross poops. Since LO is likely to be my last baby  :(( I am just trying to not rush through her babyhood.

  • She is showing all the signs of being ready for solids, but I've just been holding off until 6 months to consistently have foods ready for her if she wants them.
  • I'm glad you posted this.  I've been feeling like we're the last to try, so I'm happy to see I'm not alone.  We got an ok from the pedi at 4 mos for rice cereal, but I wanted to wait until closer to 6 mos and go more quickly to other things,  I think we will try rice cereal this weekend (he'll be almost 6 months)  and avocado very soon after.
