Vaccines

I have no idea if this has been asked and I don't have time to go searching because LO is freaking out! DD got her two month shots today and took them well. We came home and she slept for 2 hours, but ever since then, she has been screaming like she is in terrible pain. Nothing seems to console her... We called the nurse hotline and they said we could give tylenol, but sometimes it's best just to let them work through it and build up those antibodies... Anyone go through this already? What would/did you do? Thanks in advance!

Yes, just last week. Tried Tylenol but he spit most of it out. Did a cool wash cloth on his legs and a light massage. Mostly just snuggled him. He was extremely fussy that evening, but slept the longest stretch he had ever slept... and was happy as ever by morning. Good luck!

I've heard warm baths can help as well as skin to skin. GL!

Thanks guys! We tried the bath... Total meltdown disaster, but I didn't think of cool cloths! I'll try that!

I do think I just found the solution, however...I handed her off to daddy, took an amazingly long shower, grabbed some moscato, and am cuddled up in bed watching the bachelorette! Seems to be working for me anyways!

We did Tylenol and snuggles. The Tylenol let her calm enough to fall asleep. They are tough. Hugs momma!

just so you know, giving Tylenol won't affect "building up of antibodies" or the efficacy of the vaccine.
but other than that pp's seem to have covered everything. massage, warm bath, cool cloth, all that good stuff.

We went through this today too! I massaged his thighs while nursing him and that seemed to distract him enough. I ended up giving him Tylenol and lots of snuggles until he fell asleep.

Huh. The doctor's office also told us to avoid Tylenol for this reason. DS didn't need it anyway.

Our pedi gave her Tylenol and gave us a whole bottle to take home to keep giving as needed. Also, we did not get a big chunk of sleep after; she was actually harder to get down than usual. Figures.

giving Tylenol before the vaccines are given isn't recommended for that reason, but afterwards it won't affect anything. that's what we told our patients when I worked in peds and what my dr told us when B got his shots. if baby has fever or is in pain, give the Tylenol. no need for them to suffer if the vaccine will work just as well if you give it, IMO.

Same here pedi told us give him tylenol he spit most of it out after a couple days he was fine

@kaysa2‌ back in 2009/2010 I think it was they started coming out with articles and research advising against prophylactic acetaminophen use for vaccines because it can cause some reduced immunogenicity. however, the articles only studied use of prophylactic administration. the use of Tylenol after the vaccines to treat pain or if fever arises is still perfectly acceptable as that is it's intended purpose.

so, pain or fever after shots? give the Tylenol. babies shouldn't suffer. but that's my humble opinion.

@CDK211‌ you don't sound stupid! I'm genuinely not sure. the studies only addressed the effect of prophylactic. I've only read summaries and I'm not a physician or a scientist by any means but my best guess would be it might have something to do with it being in the bloodstream at the time the vaccines are administered? my pediatrician told us that it is still ok to give after for pain and fever because that is what Tylenol is for, not for prophylactic use. I'm sure different physicians have different opinions/interpretations of the information but it makes sense to me that using Tylenol to treat pain and fever afterwards is ok since that's the intended use of it.

so since I'm not a dr take my advice with a grain of salt but I feel like if my kid is hurting I'm going to give the Tylenol. even if giving it after does have an effect I feel like it would be extremely minimal.

This is a super helpful thread! LO has her shots in a few weeks so great to know what to be prepared for.
Question- did most of your LOs need the Tylenol after the multiple vaccine appointments or a single vaccine? My LO goes for her 2nd hep b shot tomorrow so not sure what to expect.

@AandJ28 I did not need to give S anything after her 2 month shots. I can't remember with M - I want to say maybe once or twice have I given her Tylenol (I've rarely given it at all - I think we tend to administer it too quickly with little kids)
