Our lo has been slow to gain and our doc suggested we supplement. I want to keep my supply up and hopefully tell my body to make more, especially in the evening! Do you feed than supplement and then pump? What works best for you?!
Here is what I did at first (per my doc's instructions): BF, then if LO is still showing hunger signs give 1-2 ounces of formula or pumped milk, then pump an hour later. I did this for about 2 weeks before LO only showed hunger signs after 1-2 feedings each day instead of every single one like he was before. I stopped doing the pumping after every feeding around that time too, and now only pump after his first and last feed of the day. So now, about 2 months after starting the supplementing, it's hit or miss - some days he goes without any supplement (or goes for days at a time) and some days he takes around 4-6 ounces throughout the day.
Not trying to hijack...but I am starting to supplement some and now I'm not sure what to do about the vitamin D drops. Do you give them or is that part of the formula?
We supplement as well, usually about 2-3 oz each day. I usually do it during one of the last feelings of the day, although there are times he doesn't act hungry so I just follow his cues. I also try to pump before I go to bed, about 2-3 hours after his last feeding.
Thank you ladies! I just tried a mix of formula & breastmilk and he drank 1.5oz. Clearly he needs/wants the extra milk. I guess the pump and I will become good friends!!
