HFM again..

Taylor has hfm for the 3rd time in 2 months! It's so frustrating because of how miserable he gets and the fact that there's not much I can do to help. I only realized this morning what it was because I noticed the rash. This is the first time that he got a ton of the rash - it's all over his hands, feet and butt. Is there anything I should be doing to help relieve the rash? Poor kiddo - really hope it passes quickly.

Sorry to hear you are dealing with this again. That's no fun! Is he itchy or just uncomfortable? If he's itchy maybe try some Tylenol or baby Benadryl. I hope he feels better soon.

Ok maybe I am ignorant here but how do you continue getting it over and over again?  Wouldn't the child develop some antibodies against it like most viruses?  Did your ped say anything?  DD had roseola in the spring and our ped made a comment how her likelihood of getting it again would be low then.

I would try an oatmeal bath with a bit of lavender oil (maybe 5 drops) to ease the discomfort of the rash. Poor little guy :( Good luck momma! ((hugs))

I second the oatmeal bath and benadryl. Poor little guy.  That weirds me out that he has had it so often!

Thanks everyone! From what I understand they can get different strains of the virus. I've seen an email come out from his daycare 2x in the 2 months, so I'm assuming they are just passing around different strains? This is much different from the first 2 times because of he crazy rash. I'm still calling his pedi tomorrow to make sure he doesn't want to see him, but the oatmeal bath has helped a lot.

Oh no, that is not good. It's really too bad it's going around that much at his d/c. Is it a large center? I would think they would be taking extra precautions with it going around that much...course, how much can the prepare for HFM with a large number of kiddos.

I'm so happy we are in a small at home d/c.

Hope he feels better very soon!

@jobiann I talked to them today - they said they've been bleaching and cleaning and it just keeps spreading. She said this strain is the worst spread case she's ever seen. :( He really hasn't caught anything else, which is good, but hoping this is the last case of this for a while (or ever would be nice..).

I know it's highly contagious, I just have never heard of a child having it this often. I hope he feels better really soon!

That's the worst!  DS's only had it once, but it's gone through daycare twice since he started going in April 2013.  The first time it went through DC, DS and the other breastfed baby didn't get it, so there must have been some anti-bodies in the milk for them, but this last time there were no breastfed babies there, and everyone got it, even those who had it the last time.  My dr thinks playgrounds have a lot to do with the spread of it this time of year, which makes pretty good sense to me.  We're only really able to play on playgrounds from May through Oct where I live, and that's when they see the big outbreaks.

@bennikki wow that does make sense. I'm going to mention that to the daycare - they might not even think of sanitizing that daily.
