6 MO bad nursing behaviors

DS2 is currently in daycare getting bottles but nurses when I go over there during lunch and otherwise when we're together.  Lately, whenever he unlatches when he's not sleepy, he just pulls his head back with my nipple still in his mouth, scraping with his gums, which doesn't feel great, but I'm sure it will be pretty painful once his teeth come in (I can see a top one through his gums).  He also does this every once in awhile while nursing just to look around, especially on the breast with the slower flow and lower supply, even when we are alone in a quiet room.  I don't want to prematurely end all our nursing sessions by unlatching him with my finger, though, sometimes I can't always tell when he's done and he goes back for more.  I don't think he had a great latch to begin with (never opens up that wide but still seems to get plenty of milk) but I think it is getting worse and I often have to relatch him.  He also likes to pull his head away while nursing, stretching my nipple in his mouth while pushing his body away with my breast and it seems like we're fighting with me trying to hold him close and him pushing his body away and trying to stiffen his arm.  I'm not sure how to get him to have better manners/technique at this point in the game.  He doesn't understand no yet and I don't want to deter him too much during the few nursing sessions we have together during the week and have him go on a nursing strike, I'm trying to keep it enjoyable for both of us and not have him decide that bottles are just easier and less of a fight.  Any ideas?  I'm just really worried about when his teeth come in any day now and don't want it to be the end of BFing.

Re: 6 MO bad nursing behaviors

  • When my babies go through this phase, I nurse only in a dark quiet room, I watch closely for signs that he is delatching or done swallowing and I usually end the nursing session at the first hint of a bite.
