Possible Spina Bifida Update in OP

I had my a/s last week, and every thing seemed good- growth was good, good placenta placement, all that stuff. But today I got a call from my OB- my AFP results came back high and he reviewed my ultrasound again and there is a concern about possible Spina Bifida. So on Thursday I have to drive to the closest city (3hrs away) and have another ultrasound and see the genetic counselor.

I am worried, but I'm grateful that we live where great medical professionals and access to care if she does happen to have any problems!

**Update** So I had my appointment today- After 3 hours of rolling around, walking, drinking, peeing Little Miss proved that she does not like her privacy being invaded, lol! They were not super happy with the images they got, but we were able to confirm that she does NOT have a severe form of spina bifida! Yay! With her positioning there is still a question of a closed form, so she will be tested again after she is born. It was a big relief to say the least!

One weird thing they found was a golf ball sized fibroid in my uterus. I haven't had any bleeding/spotting at ALL this pregnancy, and I don't have any pain, but I will be getting more ultrasounds (from my reg OB) to monitor the fibroid.

I was told my 2nd had a high chance of Down syndrome and my niece had spina bifida. My son ended up not having it and my niece didn't either. Don't get too worried, I know that's impossible, chances are they are being overly cautious.

We went through this exactly two weeks ago. My AFP came back at 3.85 after the quad screening and they called and had us come in for a meeting with the genetic counselor then a level 2 ultrasound. Thankfully, it was a false positive. The ultrasound came back great - no spina bifida but they will continue to monitor me and my little man closely. They are guessing my level was elevated because my placenta is not 100% optimal and my baby might be on the smaller side at birth. I go for extra ultrasounds now every few weeks abd non stress tests towards the end.
