CD Newborns?

After bringing DS home from the hospial at 2 days old, we started using our diaper service prefolds and covers (Prorap Classics NB and Bummis Super Whisper Wrap NB). After a few days it looked like the covers were rubbing against his cord stump, so I freaked out and put him back in the Pampers Swaddlers from the hospital.

Has anyone else used CDs on a newborn before the cord stump falls off, and how did you prevent it from rubbing? I hate the disposables, but I can't stomach the thought of the covers irritating his skin or causing probs with the stump. The Prorap covers have a dip for the cord, but they still rub when he scrunches his body up, and the Bummis are worse.

Edit: He's only about 7lbs, so perhaps they wouldn't rub as much on a bigger baby?

Re: CD Newborns?

  • DD was 6 lb 10 oz, and she was in cloth from the beginning. I just didn't worry about it, really. She wore proraps and bummis. We used preemie proraps, and they were very low, but of course, it may not be worth it if you have to order online. The stump would likely be gone by then.

  • Even regular newborn diapers would rub if your DC scrunched up.  But I'd use what you're most comfortable with.  We didn't start with cloth diapers until 2.5-3 weeks - a little after the cord stump fell off, mostly because she was such a peanut and the covers we'd bought were too big for her skinny thighs.  She needed some time to gain weight.
