Things I wish someone told me

So as my little Jack decided to be a July baby instead I just wanted to share something I learned that no one had ever told me about labor... It can make you throw up, a lot!

The minute I got checked in I started vomiting. I felt bad when the girl came to do the first cervix check and I told her I just filled her trash can with vomit and it went in through most of my labor. She said its common. So there's my something I wish I knew. Anyone else?

Re: Things I wish someone told me

  • It's actually RARE for your water to break as the first sign if labor and unexpectedly. I see so many posts in here of people being afraid their water is just going to break randomly in public or whatever. Usually contractions have already started and you're more or less ready for it (in hospital in a gown or been labouring at home).

  • It didn't happen to me...but I have heard of it!  I've also seen it on some birth stories I've watched.

  • Even though I'm a STM i wish someone would have told me about false labor and full stomach contractions which do absolutely nothing except cause you pain....and it can last for weeks wtf!?

  • My legs were shaking uncontrollably during transition. Apparently this is totally normal and caused by adrenaline, but I felt almost bad about it since I'd never heard of such a thing! DH's main job between contractions was to try and steady my legs

  • If you have a C, you can't eat until you fart.

So don't even think that you can get McDonald's breakfast if you have a C at 9:30

I didn't know you could be having contractions 2 min apart lasting for 1.5 min and still be in early labor. They don't tell you that shit. Or about the puking. Or that any slight movement like moving a leg, or hell, even a toe, can set off a contraction once you're in labor. They don't breathe a word about that. Nope.
    Seriously!

  • @rstarrlemaitre‌ my whole body was shaking throughout all of L&D it was really scary but everyone said it was totally normal. I wish I knew about that too
  • It's not really "how long" your contractions last for, but how far apart they are. The 5-1-1 rule had me so confused when I was in labor with DS that I thought my contractions weren't really counting because they were lasting 30-45 seconds instead of a full minute. By about 2-3 minutes apart, we finally left for the hospital and I was 8cms when I got there. So don't let the time that they last for confuse you. Concentrate on the time between them.

I did a natural birth with DS - the minute he was out, dr. Was elbow deep fishing for blood clots... Would have been nice to have a heads up- but they put something in my iv immediately that made me loopy, hell I didn't care at that point, my little human was finally here, I could care less how drugged I was.

Also, when you deliver at a training hospital, prepare for 1000s of interns to be in and out of your room non stop. We had to tell them I was just checked 10 minutes ago, or they already did that test. So frustrating when you're so exhausted and need to sleep!

Also- lactation consultant. I kept asking and asking and asking. By the last day, I got a half ass consult right before we went home. So I could have potentially been nursing wrong my whole stay and wouldn't have known it.
  • One of my best friends is a labor and delivery nurse and she's told me that, as afraid as most women are of pooping during delivery, she said that nurses LIKE it when you poop during delivery. She said that is an indication you are using the right muscles to push!

As a PP said above, push as if you're pooping and you're doing it right!

Going off of OP's comment - that vomiting means you are dilating and often means your cervix is almost gone. It's actually a good thing!

Knowing more about prodromal labor would have been nice.
    YES.  W T F. I never had this the other 2 times. I'm annoyed.

  • I vomited quite a bit last time around and no one told me about it either! It just goes to show you that just about anything can happen while you are in labor so don't be surprised if you have "weird" symptoms.

  • No one told me that if your water doesn't break on its own they do it for you and you basically have a flow of fluid for hours and you have to continually change your bed pads. It is the most uncomfortable feeling. I think I thought that your water would break in one big gush-clean it all up and then move on to contracting and delivery.
