Charleston with toddler?

we are planning a trip with a large group of friends to charleston in October and trying to decide whether to take DD. She will be 2 years 9 months and has traveled well in the past. We would be the only couple with a child, but it's all my girlfriends from grad school and they all love kids and are excited to meet her.

We already know, with the size of the group, people will split off and do their own thing at various times so it's really not an issue of dragging her around to "adult" stuff. Just wondering what kinds of things there are to do with a toddler and what people recommend - activities, restaurants, etc. Would you bring a LO or no?

  • There's a children's museum although it's not very big. Your kid might like the Yorktown, a big carrier ship that's open for tourists. Lots of places to climb and run.

I always recommend Shem Creek in Mt. Pleasant. There's a small county park where you can walk on this long pier out into the creek. It's beautiful and DS loved running there when we last went. There's also a fun bar/restaurant on Shem Creek called Reds. It's right on he water and would be fun for you all earlier in the day before it became more bar-esque.

Hominy Grill is delicious and pretty kid-friendly.

I'll keep thinking and see if I can come up with more.

  • We took DS when he was around 18 months.  He loved the children's museum and the aircraft carrier.  We stayed in Moncks Corner (just outside of Charleston) and we also did Cypress gardens and Mepkin Abbey.  He loved the boat ride in Cypress Gardens (if you have seen the movie The Notebook this is where they filmed the scene on the water with all the swans). They also have a butterfly house which he enjoyed.  Mepkin Abbey he just loved running around on the grounds which were beautiful to walk.  We also did a plantation house (forget which one) but he mostly just slept for that.

  • They have a great aquarium!  It's right near the children's museum I think.

  • Oh yeah I totally forgot about the aquarium! Great views of the harbor down there by the aquarium too!!
