Treatment for thrush

Anyone try anything natural that worked? I'm trying to avoid OTC creams that my LO could ingest. TIA!

Grapefruitseed oil and gentian violet.  But remember that you have to treat LO as well as yourself, else you can just pass it back and forth.

  • I second @hlm184's suggestions. I have a friend who is on her second round of thrush. Baby puked up the Nystatin every time but she's been doing grapefruit seed oil (every hour the baby is awake!) and, while it's laborous, it's working.

  • ^^ yup!

if i ever get thrush again, i will go the gentian violet route.
  • Thank you, ladies. I'm traveling all week, but will find a Whole Foods or TJ's ASAP! This is somehow more painful than mastitis, minus the overall feeling of death.
  • Nystatin was basically useless, not to mention unrealistic because it had to be given 4 times a day ( and most syringes are only 1ml meaning 2 attempts each dose to get any medicine in LO's mouth). Gentian violet was more effective by a long shot and LO doesn't seem to notice I'm even swabbing it in her mouth.
  • I'm hijacking this post to ask about thrush symptoms.... My nipples are itchy and DS smells yeasty lately.. Could this be thrush? We both don't have any other symptoms (DS has been more fussy lately but I think that's due to his recent sleeping issues).

  • @cd92007‌ Check your LO's mouth for any whiteness that can't be wiped off.

Yes...the grapefruit seed extract. I got mine at the vitamin shoppe. Every waking hour for both of you...which is laborious but after about 2 days, you should see a significant improvement. Just set an hourly alarm on your phone.

@cd92007‌ is nursing extremely painful? That as my red flag to even think to check for white patches. For me, the searing nipple pain came about 24 hours after unrelenting itchy boobs.

  • No, no pain when I nurse but it is pretty painful when I pump :( and DS doesn't have any white patches that I can tell but I'll keep an eye out.. Thanks!!

Also, angelmama's thrush cream worked well for me.
