August 2014 Moms

This may be a noob question but...

Holy foot swelling batman!

I'm close to 36 weeks at the moment  (so far behind you all!), and thus far I hadn't really had too much swelling. I had one day of it, but drinking loads of water and elevating for a few hours got the swelling down.
Yesterday around 3pm i noticed the swelling again and thought no biggy, I need more water. So I drank more water, elevated the feet, all that good stuff. It didn't go down by the time I went to bed, but figured surely the swelling would be gone in the morning since my feet would be elevated the whole time. No dice. This morning they're still swollen, and if I press them the indent will stay for close to a minute before disappearing. I dont have fever/chills/headache/dizziness/swelling any other place but my feet & ankles, or any other symptoms that would make me raise the pre-eclampsia alarm. I plan to call the doc at 3pm if the swelling hasn't gone down, but while I wait for the magical 24 hour mark I wanted to see if you ladies had any words of wisdom or if you thought I should call prior to the 24 hour mark.

I would call now to ease your mind and just to be safe, but you are right around the point that my swelling began to get bad and wasn't even going down in the mornings anymore. It seriously happened overnight too, like your body just wakes up and say "ok you're too pregnant now."

  • I have had swelling in mostly my left leg for the past few weeks and it used to go down at night but not anymore.  No signs of pre-e and I even had an ultrasound on my leg on Friday to check for blood clots.  The doctor is thinking that it must just be the way my uterus is sitting.  It's uncomfortable and awful to look at but the most I can do is drink water and keep my feet up.  Hope everything checks out well for you and you get some relief.
  • It's really normal, but better to be safe!
  • My midwife said that when you get swelling in addition to water and elevation eat some protein and salt.  It helps balance out the water retention.
  • It's normal- I've had it since 36 weeks and had to buy new shoes cause mine wouldn't fit!
  • Usually it's normal. Sometimes the swelling stays overnight or longer. If your worried you can still call your dr they may want you to come in and check your urine and blood pressure.

  • It should be fine, but you can always call your dr to be sure!
