I watched Fiddler over the weekend with my parents, I haven't seen it since i was a kid. So now I'm listening to musicals on Pandora, and found out that they are turning Into The Woods into a movie musical with Johnny Depp as the Wolf and Meryl Streep as the witch. I have blinders on as Bernadette Peters as the witch. I hope this is much better than Sweeny Todd. What are your thoughts?
Even though I generally prefer stage productions, I'm generally intrigued by their cinematic counterparts. It's the same for me with books adapted to film.
James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim are working directly with Disney studios on the project as well. Sondheim has mentioned a few changes to the production.
I think Johnny is perfect as the Wolf. He'll be a memorable "over the top" character (as is his wheel house) but he won't be everywhere we turn in the film so I won't get sick of him. I'm with you with BP as the witch...classic!
I played Rapunzel in our high school's production of ITW. Love this show. My family? Hated that 3 hours of their life more than anything, though.
I love Into the Woods and the cast looks promising. LOVE LOVE LOVE Christine Baranski. Hopefully this will make me forget the atrocity that was the movie version of Les Mis.
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one who hated it. It was so bad I wanted to cry.
I liked the Les Miserables movie, but I haven't seen the stage version so I have nothing to base it on. We were supposed to go when the tour came here but it sold out. I really want to go see it in NYC, tickets are so expensive though.
When it comes to making musicals into movies, Norman Jewison (Fiddler & JCS) did a great job. I can't think of any other musical movies other than those that I've liked as much as the stage version.
I had really high expectations. I'd been in love with the book, stage version, and a few of the movie versions for a long time. The latest fell so flat for me.
I saw Into The Woods awhile back and remember none of it... Hoping the movie is good though, especially because I feel like people don't experience musicals as much as in the past.
Also, Kinky Boots for the win if any of you haven't seen it! It's a must see. Simply amazing.
I'm a huge musical geek! I grew up with family that had worked on Broadway and introduced us to all kinds of shows.
I'm pissed about this adaptation. They are absolutely sanitizing everything about it. This is NOT a family friendly show, but that's what Disney is turning it into. There is a huge theme of sexual awakening for the Little Red and Jack characters that's just being cut out. This whole thing has been talked about a lot in many of my music circles and they are all equally pissed.
Also, I'm a fan of Johnny Depp but not his singing. I was pretty disappointed with Sweeney Todd.
