TTC After a Loss

IUI questions

In a week AF should be here and we will be starting an IUI. I'm excited and scared. I hate the unexpected.

After our last loss we met with an RE and based on our testing came up with this plan. I know I've been lucky getting pg, but I'm getting older and want to move this process along faster. I'm feeling comfortable with this plan.

Anyway, those of you that have had an IUI any advice? Things you wish you had done differently? Any foods you ate/drank to help?

TIA ladies!

Thanks girls. My anxiety is through the roof. I know it's pretty straight forward, but I can't help myself.

  • I don't have experience with IUI itself, but just something that I wish someone had told me about a month ago before I started my IUI cycle....things don't always turn out as expected...my IUI cycle turned into an IVF cycle last week when on my first follicle scan I had eight follies....so even though we think hard and plan for one thing (IUI), doesnt mean out bodies will always cooperate .Not a bad thing that mine got converted to an IVF cycle, but not at all when I expected. Good luck!

I've had two so far, with the third coming up this week. In my experience, they've been fairly simple and straight forward (mine have been in two different RE offices but the protocol has been the same): you go in a room with the usual gyno chair, you get in to place as you would any vaginal exam, they have you sign off that the sperm they are about to use is your husbands (ha!) and then you lay back and they insert a catheter into your cervix (which may or may not cause you to cramp) and then they inject the sperm through the catheter. After that they let you get comfortable and you wait 15-20 minutes before getting dressed again and going about your day. At my first RE they also inserted a cervical "cap" to help keep the sperm in place that I took out about 4 hours later, but at my new RE they did not do this. I know some people report cramping, but I haven't had this issue. They will make you empty your bladder beforehand, so I would suggest refraining from drinking a lot before the procedure so you don't sit there needing to pee. Make sure you ask about their protocol for determining pregnancy. At my first RE, they did beta's, but my new RE doesn't do beta's until you get a positive HPT. Besides that, I can't think of anything worth mentioning. It's really easy and you can absolutely go to work afterwards. I wish you the best of luck!
