Your Sleep and Hearing LO

When LO and I go to bed, I pass right now. Like deep sleep, like no dreaming type sleep. Sorry to say so. But my worry is that I don't hear LO until he REALLY needs me, and that makes me feel bad. He's not a crier at night (sorry to say again) - I can't count the number of times he's cried in the night on one hand. Last night he cried out in his sleep around 430, so I wondered if he was awake long before.

Am I worrying for nothing? DH says you'll hear him when he needs you. I even have the monitor on full beside my bed even though he's a few steps down the hall. Anyone else sleep deeply and wake when LO needs you? I just need some reassurance.

Re: Your Sleep and Hearing LO

  • I wouldn't worry about it. I typically hear most of DD's noises. Half of the time she's still sleeping when I check on her. In the morning, she lays in her crib babbling to herself for 15-30 minutes, before deciding she's had enough and wants out.

  • Yeah sometimes I wake and he's just still and quiet sucking his thumb so I go back to bed.

Just a silly irrational fear he wI'll lay there wondering where I am. Oh does it ever stop?
  • Every little noise he made in his bassinet beside my bed woke us both up so I was like wtf why can't I hear him properly. Sometimes dh will nudge me and say he's stirring in his sleep. So he hears him before I do sometimes.

Can't complain about getting some sleep I guess :)
  • I sleep with ear plugs (DH is a snorer) and did the same with DS1. While I missed the waking up/light noises I always heard him as soon as he cried. With ds1 I tried it out during the day so I would know how loud I needed the monitor at night.

Ds2 sleeps in the RNP next to me and it works the same way.

I worry about the same thing. The monitor is on DH's side because he takes the first shift. DH had the monitor on really low because he is a light sleeper so I barely hear it. I wake up and see the indicator on red so I get up. With the a/c on I can't really hear DS so I wonder if he's been crying awhile. DH said he'd hear him if I didn't but I still worry.

  • Even if you were a light sleeper and woke easily, would you really want to run to LO at every little sigh and squeak?

I'm a pretty deep sleeper anyway, but I've trained myself to tune out the little noises and only wake for the important things like hunger signs and distress cries.

No, you're right. I just worried that he would be needing me and I would be sleeping away.

DS1 was in his own room from almost day 1. I think I have only failed to wake up for him crying maybe a handful of times. And even then it was more that DH got up before the crying woke me. Don't sweat it! If he needs you, he'll get your attention. :) And IMO letting them fuss a bit first gives them practice at self-soothing.

  • @florassecret Nah, babies are noisy. They like to talk and grunt and wiggle. It's how they learn to self-soothe and gain independence. As long as you're hearing the important sounds, you're doing great. Enjoy your sleep! :)

I'm a deep sleeper, too. DH is the one who typically wakes up due to baby's little sounds, not me. I *almost* feel guilty about this, but not enough to move the monitor to my side. I do wake up when baby is upset, but I can typically sleep through the grunts and hand sucking. Enjoy your sleep!
  • I'm the deep sleeper in our relationship but I still wake up the second I hear DS cry, faster than DH too.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.

  • I don't think you have any reason to worry. I wish I had that problem. I hear every little noise she makes which leads to sleepless nights

    It's a BOY
