stay-cation

I am taking the last 2 weeks of August off and alot of the ideas i had in my head (mostly beach plans) are now falling apart so it looks like it will be more of a staycation than anything else. I am actually looking forward to just being DS and me and being a stay at home mommy for a few weeks. There is a chance DH is off for part or all of the 2nd week, so we were talking about doing the zoo one day but thats really it. I will also be down the shore at a minimum from Friday to Sunday of that first week.  Give me some ideas of other things we should do-either just DS and I or all 3 of us as a family. I dont want to just be home for 2 weeks running errands and unpacking/organizing our new house. I want to do fun things for DS!

Re: stay-cation

  • I don't know where you live, but here are some of the things that we do on days/weekends off. Go to the park, go swimming at our local swim school/township rec center, go to a splash pad, go to a local festival (they have a ton of different ones where we live throughout the summer), go to a local farmers market. You could also check your local library---they might have fun programs that you could check out during the week. Depending on where you live, could you drive to somewhere different, stay the night and explore that town and then drive back the following day?

  • My 2 year old is nuts about museums, esp kid ones. And she enjoyed the aquarium. Also, any time there is a park (ducks to feed are a bonus), she's a happy camper.
  • Are there any areas nearby for fruit/veggie picking?  Not sure how old your DS is, but DD really started to enjoy apple picking around age 2.  We then expanded to strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, etc.  There are a few farm about 30 mins away from us with animals, pick-your-own stuff, a farmstand, play structures, etc.

Blueberries take forrreeeeever, so good if you're looking for a way to kill a little time.

this is a great idea i am SURE there is a place close. hes 18 mos, but we did go apple picking and he loved it.
  • I like the splash pad idea! And farmers markets are fun as well! Our town library does story hours and they also do like a kids play group at the town hall.

Since you said 'down the shore' I'm going to take a stab at you being in or around NJ, sorry if I'm off here ;)

Sesame Place (not sure if at 18 months he'd love that), there is some new construction amusement park in southern NJ, crayola factory in easton PA...   those all might be a little too old for him though.

Find a pony ride place? Explore local parks or parks that are a little ways away, pack a picnic, etc. Go see some friends you don't get to see too often b/c of work schedule?  If there is a pool in your neighborhood or a local pool club that has nice facilities for younger kids, go check that out a few days!

Going on my NJ assumption (again sorry if I'm wrong here), this website has some stuff that could be good...or really bad....lol...https://www.funnewjersey.com/upload_user/Fun_with_Kids/THINGS_TO_DO_WITH_LITTLE_KIDS_TODDLER_ATTRACTIONS_IN_NJ.HTM
  • If you are from the NJ area Sesame is great.  We took DS when he was about 14 months, only because we were taking DD who was 3, he loved it.  There were a ton of things LOs could do next to all the bigger things.
I wouldn't recommend Crayola, when we took DS there when he was under 2 he did nothing but put things in his mouth, even when we just went this week he still didn't really get it, and he was 2 in May.
Land of Make Believe is great for his age.
  • @groovygrl GREAT pick up on my down the shore slip--what a give away that was. hahaha. all great suggestions...thats ladies!

I was going to be pretty surprised if you weren't from there, even if you didn't currently live there :). You just don't hear that anywhere else...lol.
