Suddenly measuring really behind***Update***

Hi ladies
I am wondering if anyone has had this happen to them. I could use a little advice or just T&P's. I am currently 33 weeks and I went in for my growth scan 2 days ago. My little girl has gone from measuring in the 62% a month ago to the 31% now. Her abdominal cavity is measuring at 10%.

Her heartbeat is 158 (great), my amniotic fluid is 14.1 (normal range). They ran a doppler on the cord which looks fine. The doctors don't seem to understand what is causing it.

I know you are not specialists but I am looking for any anecdotal stories about babies suddenly measuring small but turning out ok. I am now going in weekly for nst and in 3 weeks I will have another growth scan. They are saying they might have to consider taking her early since I may not be able to keep her growing.

***Update*** I went in for my nst yesterday and baby is doing great but I am still measuring behind. The new doctor in my practice brought up IUGR and stated he thinks I should induce at 37 weeks. So that is what we are going to do. I would of course prefer that dd stay in place for at least a couple of extra weeks, I don't want to take the chance that something goes wrong. I have my next growth scan in 2 weeks.

I had iugr among other issues in my last pregnancy with my twins. Had a BPP and growth scan a week apart and between those weeks my twins fell 3 weeks behind in growth. OB talked about possibly delivering the following week. I was to do a nst Sunday (my OB appt was a thursday) then a nst and BPP Tuesday, see him Wednesday to discuss results. If everything looked good he would push my induction another week if not I was scheduled for induction the next day. I didn't pass the sunday tests and delivered via c/s that day. On top of iugr, I had pre-e and hellp. My babies did great outside the womb. They are now happy sand healthy (almost) 22 month Olds. Not sure if that helps you or not but that's my story.

I'd check in with a doctor who "seems to understand" a little bit more. :-?

Thanks everyone. I have my nst on Tuesday so I will ask about this. If I had not had this most recent scan, I would have no idea. She is always moving, her heart rate is good and the fundal measurement is right on track.

I guess pregnancy is just one day at a time, just like parenthood.

It's possible it's IUGR and it's possible baby is just small. I had growth scans at 32w & 36w (due to pre-e concerns). At 36w DD's belly was measuring less than 2nd% and brought her total to 12th%. We were already doing BPPs & NSTs twice a week and were told we could be sent for induction at any appointment based on how everything looked (we also had "borderline" cord dopplers and slightly aging placenta). Anyhow, our induction was ultimately scheduled at 39w4d and DD was perfect, just small. She's been around 5th% for height and weight and is 2.5yrs old.

It seems really odd that the doctor wouldn't consider or mention IUGR... My son went from 50th percentile to 2% in a matter of weeks. They delivered him the next morning after the ultrasound that showed 2% due to IUGR. He was also always moving, had a great heartbeat, etc...

I'm not saying this is what is happening with you but your doctors should at least be aware that it's possible and begin to monitor you a little more closely. Good luck to you!

Thank you for all the advice. The baby is weighing in now at about 4lb 4 oz. Last month she was 3 lbs 3oz. So according to the scan, she is growing somewhat.

I will up my protein and I have cut back at work. My first nst is on Tuesday so hopefully it will go fine.

Just a quick question. Are they sending you into a MFM?? I ask b/c I have some size and potential growth issues and am getting a second look with the better machines and more specialized doc. FWIW I've been getting weekly nst or bpp tests and they're not bad. Baby has been passing with flying colors, so it looks like she's possibly just small. But we'll see this week when I meet up with the MFM.

I don't think they are sending me in for that since I have not heard that term before. My scans were done at an antenatal testing facility. The whole thing just does not make sense to me.

My DD had IUGR. I was induced at almost 39 weeks since she had stopped growing. She had to be in the NICU for five days since she had breathing issues and difficulty maintaining her blood sugar levels and body temp. DD just turned two. She has always been on the smaller side but has always been very healthy since coming home from the hospital. Good luck!
