"You're showing!"... NOPE. Just bloat and fat. But thanks!

So... I'm almost at 13 weeks and have started telling a select few people.  This is my first and I am maybe just barely overweight by a few pounds and only 5 feet tall.  Well, my best friend told her mom I'm expecting (which I'm totally fine with) and today I saw her mom and she says "oh! I guess I can say congratulations because you're officially showing!". ummmm I am??  Nope, pretty sure I'm just fat. I seriously wanted to cry.  Actually, after I left their house I did cry.  I've always struggled with my weight. I'm not even 13 weeks and from what I read if it's my first I'm definitely now showing yet. It's just bloat. and fat. This is the second time someone has made this comment to me in the last week.  The first time I just kind of brushed it off. This time it hurt though. Anyone else dealing with this? Anyone? Or I am just the lone whale of the group?? ugh.

Re: "You're showing!"... NOPE. Just bloat and fat. But thanks!

  • At 9 weeks when we told close family and friends, our long time neighbor (who is a 65 year old male) rubbed my "bloat" and said-- "I thought I saw a baby bump there!" People don't think before they speak or do and want to relate to you as much they can. Don't take it personally (just mutter under your breath and call them stupid!) :)

  • LOL- I had my neighbor over to go swimming a few weeks ago. She knew I was pregnant, but I was like 10 weeks or so at the time. Afterwards I said I felt a little self conscious in my suit and she was like "your bump is so cute!"

I did not have a bump. It was bloat.

They mean well- I keep telling myself they are just excited. To be honest, yes, my body looks different. It's not a baby showing yet, but some people just can't tell and are really excited that you are pregnant.

  • Ok you all have made me feel so much better already!!! This board is great.  Thanks!! :) My poor husband must think I'm crazy for crying over this!!
  • OMG! I'm so happy to see this. I'm getting "are u sure ur only 9 weeks"? I know I'm not showing! I'm fat people!
  • I think it's kind of a go-to saying whether you are "showing" or not. People sometimes don't know what to say. FWIW, I feel like a blobby whale at this point so you are not alone. I have always struggled with weight and feel really self conscious about it.

I'm a naturally plump person who carriers weight in my mid section and breasts. I exercise more often and more vigorously and eat better than most of my thin friends and I'll always be naturally more chubby. I starved myself and over exercised for years to maintain a "normal" body. Now that I've stopped with the eating disorder I've gained and maintained a hefty size for my height. Within months of gaining weight I was asked by multiple people I knew and strangers if I was pregnant. I wasn't. That was a few years ago and I still inevitably get asked if I'm pregnant (or how fat along I am) at least twice a year (mostly by strangers). I can't wait to finally say, "yes"! Lol no one has asked me since I actually became preggo!

My point is, no, you are not alone. You aren't a whale. And many people are fat and are asked f they're pregnant when they're not and live happy lives.

And, at only 5 feet there probably isn't much room in there for baby, so maybe you'll show earlier than is the average! Seeing as average height is quite a bit taller than 5 feet! I'm very short waisted and I was told to expect to show earlier by a few healthcare professionals.
  • I've had several people come up and rub my belly already. Are you serious I'm not even 10 weeks yet. The baby isn't even up in my belly. I have major bloat and I have a couple extra pounds on me before I became pregnant. It's like please stop touching my bloat!
  • I'm a slim person but now I'm all bloat and it just looks like I'm fat but people swear they see a bumb when honestly ik its not but I just play a long with it. Last week (10 weeks)my ccoworker said I need to touch it so she put her hand in my tummy and she said aw ur tummy is so cute. I said you do know its all bloat so basically you just rubbed my gas aka my farts lol she felt embarrased lol
  • No one, except my husband and mom have commented about my stomach. I'm 10 weeks and I've never been a thin person, but I've always tried to keep my weight in check. I feel as though my stomach just looks fat, rather than pregnant. My loved ones assure me it's because I'm pregnant. I keep googling images of pregnant women at different weeks. Even at 9 weeks really thin, athletic women had a belly. It made me feel better, perhaps it might ease your mind.

    We are growing humans.
  • Own it! Haha!
  • I have given up on trying to suck it in. So uncomfortable. At least my husband and I know why I look fat! ;)

But, I am running out of shirts. They are all too tight! Ugh!

My mom told me I popped last week.  Ummm, no, that's just bloat, thanks Mom.  She never had constipation or any bloating with either of her pregnancies so she was totally clueless about that symptom.  She also told me when I was 8w with my son that she could see a bump.  Again, no.  I know that it's just excitement over a new grandkid and being able to see him/her growing, but still.

  • I was thin the first time I got pregnant and I was showing a tiny bump by 13 weeks. It is totally possible! :)

I'm 10-odd weeks now and I can feel my little baseball in there (a hardness I can feel when I'm lying on my stomach). Sure, the baby is tiny, but your uterus is much bigger than that. :)

  • Lol! I obsessively google pics of bumps, too! As each week progresses! I still feel fat. And my 'bloat'... Well, it seems more like fat.
  • Been there! Oh wait...still there!! I've been told a few times that I'm showing as well. I'm 14w1d today. I was overweight by about 30lbs before I became pregnant and carry the weight around my middle and what seems like only in front. I've felt like I've always looked 6mo preggo. :( Now I'm bloated like never before and my blumpy flump is more noticeable than ever.

  • DH commented on my bloat the other day. He seems to like it because it looks like a bump to him.
One of my friends rubbed my blump yesterday and was like "Oh, you're so tiny!" I didn't mind because she is a good friend, but I almost wanted to tell her that the baby is not up that high yet. If someone actually tried to touch me where my uterus is, I'd have to slap them.

  • Haha I've gotten that! I just accept it, laugh, and think, "well, he/she is actually closer to my hooha than in my belly, but whatever" lol

At 6 weeks, a co-worker asked if I was pregnant. It was all bloat and I was shocked he had the nerve to ask. At this point I owning it. I'm showing, bloat or bump, who cares. But this is my second. I didn't really show with DS until 16 weeks and I was also 20 lbs heavy then. People are jerks!

  • I feel for you OP! Over the past few years I've had numerous people mistake my belly fat for pregnancy. And when I tell them, no I'm not pregnant, they shy away and feel ashamed at what they have said. Now, when I tell people, they look at my stomach and raise their eye brows at me like I am lying to them. It pisses me off. I had one lady at work, who came in about a month or so ago, ask me if I was pregnant. #1) I don't know her and wasn't about to tell a random stranger our news before most of my colleagues, family, and friends even knew. And #2) it's none of her business anyway. So I told her no. Her response, "wow, I would start telling people that you are to avoid embarrassment!" I was like, "Bitch, did you just?" And I was hurt. But the fact that people are so ignorant, or have to put others down to make themselves feel better, is really quite sad and I just don't really give those people the time of day, or satisfaction anymore.

The fact that I have actually lost quite a bit of weight with this pregnancy has actually made me quite happy. It lets me know that I'll be able to take more of it, plus the baby weight, off after the baby is born. Pregnancy, I have discovered, has a way of resetting your body and your metabolism. Your hair gets smoother and shinier, your skin starts to clear up in the 2nd trimester, you get more energy in the 2nd trimester as well, and some women like me even lose weight at first rather than gain. So I would take advantage of this opportunity and don't let anyone get you down!

  • I'm upset because I'm almost 12 weeks and I look 4-5 months! All fat! I'm scared to embrace it because I'm for some reason I fear I'm going to lose this baby! (There are no reasons or complications) this will be my 5th child.
  • Luckily, I have had some constipation and bloat, but nothing so bad as to create a bump yet.  I actually lost a couple lbs last week!  Had me thrilled but my DH got nervous.  I cheered about it and he asked, "Are you supposed to be losing weight now?  That doesn't seem normal."  I told him if it were more than 3 lbs and later in the pregnancy, there'd be reason to worry.  But in the beginning of the 2nd trimester, no reason to worry...plus it was just 3 lbs.  I wish if I was going to be this nauseous I would lose more than that, but it's ok.  I'm also ok with the weight gain because I know I'll take it all off and then some after the pregnancy.  I have a long road ahead of me after this LO arrives and that's ok...baby steps!   ;)

  • Yup, this is my third and I'm the heaviest I have ever been starting out which is terrifying! I have def had the most bloat this go around and I've been told by a few people that I already look pregnant (I'm almost 10 weeks!) . I don't take it personally, I tell them I'm just full of shit and laugh, but seriously I am........It sucks so bad! X_X
  • I've gained 3 lbs so far and I'm 11 weeks. I'm sure it's mainly because I gave up on my diet and started eating whatever didn't make me sick. But I look fat and bloated and when I mentioned it to DH he commented that I probably shouldn't show for another 6 or 7 weeks. At the rate I'm going, I'm afraid he's going to be sorely disappointed. Let's be honest--I've also quit exercising because I have no energy so I'm pretty sure he's worried I'm going to get huge and never lose it. I'm worried too...but not enough to get out of bed and move.
  • At first.... when I hit 11-12 weeks people thought I was showing and I was like.. yeah! Like I was genuinely excited. But now that I'm almost 14 weeks I know I'm just fat and bloated and I'm really sad about it.... good thing I just went along with it at first and now nobody says anything
