diaper genie or garbage pail?

I am totally over thinkin this...
With Ds we CD part time and used a garbage pail (with lid) for an disposable diapers when we used them. That seemed to work well enough for the smell.

This time I don't plan on CD. So with two in diapers will a garbage can work again to contain the smell or would i be better to buy a diaper genie? And if i diaper genie is it true you can use it with regular garbage bags instead of the refills?

Re: diaper genie or garbage pail?

  • We use our regular garbage can. Don't like the genie because you have to stick your hand in there to get it open. Neighbors use the Dekor and I like that one better, but maybe when their diapers get stickier.

  • Same here with CDing the older one and giving it up when the twins came (actually while pregnant; I couldn't stand handling the poop and laundry was so much harder). I use a Diaper Genie for poop diapers and a regular trash can for pee. I have the one with a foot pedal, so no shoving your hand in, and I do use the refills because trying to rig something with a regular bag is a serious pain.

  • Regular garbage can w lid. We use plastic grocery bags as liners and empty once per day.

  • I knew i was over thinking it. :)
I will stick to a regular pail w/ lid. With.Ds when he has poopy diapers we always use to throw them right into the outside trash anyways. So maybe the same system will work again.

  • With my daughter, we learned about 6 months in to dump as much of the solid poop as we could into the toilet, flush it, and then throw the diaper into the regular trash can w/lid. It helped with the smell tremendously.

  • I highly recommend the diaper genie.  It really holds the odor in. I have the one with the foot pedal as well so you don't have to get any hands dirty and with twice the pooping, you will be throwing trash away very often.  I'm definitely buying another diaper genie for the twins. So between them and my 1 year old we will have two.  It is really worth it especially as we will be more busier with the kids. If you want to ration your diaper genie refills you could only put poopy diapers in them.

  • Yeah, we use regular trash can w/ a lid too.  A small one, which forces DH to empty daily.  I also put poopy diapers in a separate bag before tossing.

  • This may not apply to you but for anyone who has dog - definitely get a garbage with a heavy lid or a diaper genie. Of course, this also depends on the dog but our dog LOVES diapers (dirty or clean) and would absolutely pull diapers out of the garbage can if available.

This lesson brought to you by the fact that I used my kitchen garbage once for a dirty diaper...and had to chase the dog throughout the house to get it back.

  • I use the diaper genie for the nursery and just use kitchen garbage when we are downstairs. I like the diaper genie pretty well. I can sometimes smell the poopy diapers but it's never that bad. It seems to keep the smell in fairly well for the most part.
