insomnia has arrived....

I suppose I'm thankful it took this long. With my first pregnancy I had major issues sleeping from about 33 weeks on. I'm 37 now, but insomnia was my worst complaint the first time and I really hoped I would skate through without it this time around. Anyone else? What do you do to try and sleep?

Re: insomnia has arrived....

  • Benedryl. It does make me really groggy to get up and pee, but I usually fall back asleep pretty fast. Also cut back on how much I drink at night so I'm not up every hour to pee.

  • This has been discussed on a daily basis. I wake up anywhere from 1 to 3 times a night and depending on the issue I might be able to go back to sleep and I might not. My main issue is acid reflux but then sometimes (such as last night) it's because of contractions or i feel sick or achy.

  • I was up last night at 2:00, so I came into the living room to try to sleep on the couch. I ended up watching a couple episodes of Roseanne, and that made me fall back asleep. I've been having insomnia since maybe around 26-28 weeks?

  • If you find a miracle cure, please let me know!

I take a diclegis at night, and it has unisom in it.  So, that helps me at least fall asleep.  My husband is also reading Lord of the Rings to me at bedtime.  After about 15 pages, I'm usually pretty sleepy. ;)

My problem is going back to sleep after I wake up in the middle of the night or early morning.  If I can tell what is keeping me up, then I try to fix it.  If I'm in pain, I try to make myself get up and take a Tylenol.  If I have heartburn, I go get a tums.  When I know that I'm not going to be able to fall asleep for a long time for whatever reason, I try to just get out of bed for a little while.  If it is in the middle of the night, I just get the computer for a few and then try sleep again a little later.  When I wake up really early, and I've been awake for close to an hour, I just go ahead and get up.  Depending on my schedule, I may get to take a nap later in the day.  That always isn't the case though.

I realize that most of that doesn't really fix the problem, but it is better than laying in bed wide awake and miserable.

  • I was given the suggestion of Tyenol PM by a nurse when I was in triage last week. I have been taking it and it helps some.

I probably should have clarified that they aren't symptoms or complaints keeping me awake. It's just pure insomnia. I do have some pm medicine but I'm limiting myself to only once every three nights. I'm sure it's safe but psychologically I struggle with taking sleep meds. I guess what I really wanted was company for my misery :)
  • I am company for your misery! Thankfully, it doesn't happen every night, but a few nights a week. I have trouble sleeping pretty much every night, but sometimes I can at least equate it to everything just straight up hurting when I lay down. But then the other nights, I'll actually get myself in a pretty comfy position and just WIDE awake...for hours and hours. Sunday night I went into bed around 1030, got myself comfy, and although my body was exhausted (and I thought my mind was too!) there was no falling asleep. I watched 2 movies on TV, that was until about 230 am, then we had a bad storm and the satellite was knocked out. Then I just laid wide awake in bed petting the cat until about 4am. I got up to pee then, when I went back into bed I finally fell asleep, but then my alarm goes off at 5 for work. Needless to say, yesterday was a VERY VERY hard day at work. I just felt like crying all day.
  • Terrible insomnia last night. Fell asleep with no issues around 9:30. Woke up at 11:30 to pee and that was it. Could not fall back asleep for a long time. I put some baby stuff away, paced around, snuggled my dog, peed 3 more times and finally fell back asleep.
I don't look at the clock because it stresses me out even more. I am too nervous to take any sleep aids :((
