Favorite "crunchy" grocery store

I used to live in DC where Trader Joes, Harris Teeter, and Whole Foods ruled with an iron fist. When we moved to Texas, I fell in Lurve with Central Market. Then they opened a Trader Joes...and now a World Market...and I thought, "what town needs a Central Market, Trader Joes, Sprouts, AND Whole Foods?!?" So, poll, what's your fav?

Re: Favorite "crunchy" grocery store

  • Oh, my fav is Central Market. If I had a million dollars, I would eat there every day.

  • We have none! I had never heard of them until this board. :( Small town syndrome

I also don't have "crunchy" stores around me. There might be one about an hour away but if it takes me more than 35 minutes to get to the grocery store I'm not going to go there.

This, except even 35 minutes is way too far when I have at least a dozen other stores within 15 minutes. Giant may not be a crunchy store, but they have a natural food section and they aren't too good for Berks County so they get all of my doll hairs. DO YOU HEAR THAT, WEGMAN'S??

  • Ss: you missed a ton! But we don't have sprouts or HT.

I buy most my meat at a Kroger brand store (qfc). They are more of a "regular" grocery store, but they have a good organic selection for just about anything. I also buy 1/8 cow portions from local farmers, shop farmers markets.

The other chain we have up here (in addition to all the mom and pop natural shops), is PCC. Like whole foods and central markets love child. PCC gives kids under 18 free produce to eat while in store-anything you want.

Then next on my list is central market. It's located in a really cute small town/out door shopping area, and we like to go there for walks.

You forgot Wegman's, or as I like to call them, the bastards who won't let me love them because they keep refusing to build a store in my area. Shut up and take my money Wegman's!

OMG, WEGMANS!!! I did, TOTALLY forget about Wegmans. Thanks for reminding me!

ETA: I still probably like CM better, if only bc there's a Wegmans in State College, and I wonder, "what kind of college student has the kind of money to shop at Wegmans?"

Andplusalso, I am of course boycotting Wegmans now until they build a location closer to my BFF, @Lee81. ;)

I have never heard of PCC. Is that an abbreviation or what it is called?

Kroger is just a grocery store IMO.

I guess it's Seattle area only. I thought it was bigger, since we have more pcc than whole foods as central market combined.

Qfc is owned by Kroger, but not Kroger...we don't have a plain Kroger. Not really sure what they are like, I just know they exist...the qfc in my area is prob 40% natural/organic, 60 conventional.

  • This thread is making me miss California :( I haven't found a "crunchy" store I like up here yet!

  • Never been to CM or Sprouts so I chose TJ's because WF is $$$

Eta: I will go visit Sprouts when they open the new one in Arlington.

Go to CM. It is amazeballs.

    Also $$$, though.

  • I get most of my organic stuff at Kroger or Giant Eagle (OH and PA chain) but for specialty things I go to Earth Fare. It's pretty much the same as WF.

  • I voted for Whole Foods but Wegmans has my heart.

@Lee81‌ I thought there was a Wegmans in Berks County, it opened when I was an undergrad there. I just looked it up though and they must have closed. Maybe the area wasn't ready for wegmans in 1999.

  • None near me. Closest Whole Foods is 30 minutes away. Not sure about Trader Joes. Have not heard of the others.
And Wegmans needs to come here. I miss it.

Eleventy! Where did you go to school, @WhenInRome11‌??

I wonder if you are thinking of a different store? The only Wegman's here is a little country deli that definitely has no association with the grocery jerks who make me drive to Malvern or Downingtown or Allentown to stuff my face with their delicious buffet.

I went to Kutztown, graduated in 2000.

I must be thinking of another store.

Neat! I think I remember you saying you used to live in the Philly area but I didn't know you were also in Berks for awhile :) What are your thoughts on Snuzzles?

  • I don't know if we have any "crunchy" stores in Michigan and if we do there are none near me within an hour that I know of.

  • Wegman's! TJ's is a close second and HT has AWESOME EVic deals. $0.98 for a lb of butter? Yes!
  • Wegmansssss!!!!
  • We have 0 of these and whole foods is all I have heard of. Until recently I had never heard of Trader Joe's. We are supposed to get a Whole Foods which will open next summer.
  • I voted Harris Teeter because I shopped there all the time in NC. I've never lived near any of the others. Apparently there is a Sprouts on the other side of the mountains here though, so I'll have to check it out soon!
When I lived in Hawaii, we had a place called Down To Earth and it was basically my favorite place ever!!

  • I love sprouts for sales! I love TJ for so much though too. Whole foods is great but only because I can walk there.

I am feeling spoiled since I have all three of these stores so close to me.

  • We don't have any near here but I have gotten to go to trader joes a few times and loved it. I get my organic stuff at stop and shop. I'm really excited they are opening a Wild by Nature store though next month the town next to us. I will deft be shopping there.

  • @PinkDahLia44‌ where are you from? I grew up shopping at the piggly wiggly (hoggly woggly lol)

LOL, originally from PA where Giant reigns supreme, now in Texas, the land of Kroger, Tom Thumb, and Albertsons. I just picked Piggly Wiggly bc I thought most people have heard of it.

    Andplusalso it's fun to say.

We don't have all these great stores you speak of. Rumor on the street is we are getting a Whole Foods. I love going to Ozark Natural Foods, great selection. Love shopping locally! Every Saturday morning we go to the Fayetteville farmer's market.
  • I agree with @comeongetdown‌ . Harris Teeter=Kroger=not crunchy. I have been introduced to Heinens here in NE Ohio and it pretty nice, but expensive

  • Central Market.  I love their pecan gouda spread.  And their commercials are hilarious.  I pretty much only buy cheese there.  And I don't even live that close to one.

I have never seen this but clearly will have to seek it out next time I am there. I love their mushroom quesadillas.

Does the Amish grocery store down the road from me count as crunchy??

Other than that, I would have to drive about an hour up the interstate to find either a Trader Joes or Whole Foods.  I still have to drive 30 minutes to Kroger to do my grocery shopping.   They do have a nice selection of "crunchy" items, though.
