I got the mirena put in yesterday and have never had it before...

1. Can you have unprotected sex immediately afterwards or do you need to wait for it to be effective?

2. Does anyone have failure stories? I feel like I don't trust it... I definitely don't want to be pregnant again soon... I'd have 3 under 3, with the oldest JUST having turned 2!

    2. I have delivered patients with an IUD, but they were copper-- not the mirena. Obviously nothing is 100%, just make sure you can feel the strings and it hasn't migrated-- you should be good.

    1. Yes it's immediate. Doctor told me that several times during the appointment. It was pretty funny on how many times she told me that. I guess she is used to people asking since it has been a while for them to have sex.
    2. I knew this girl on DS' s BMB that it failed. Nothing is 100% besides not having sex.

    I'm pretty sure Nexplanon has a lower failure rate.

    I think I have 3 or 4 patients who got pregnant with a Mirena.

    Jess & Adam, married 2009, precious Audrey born in 2011. BFP 1/6/13, 6-wk MMC discovered at 9 wks 2/11/13. D&C 2/18/13, second D&C 4/23/13 for retained placenta.
    BFP 8/24/13!! EDD 5/1/14, delivered healthy and sweet Zoey Leanne on 5/5/14 by repeat c-section.

    The rate of failure is less than 1 out of a 100. That's the same with implants. Still doesn't mean failure doesn't happen. Just (a lot) better than hormonal birth control, condoms, and other forms.

    1. My doctor said not to trust it for 21 days.
    2. I miscarried in 2012 after getting pregnant with the mirena. It was in the correct position still and I had had it since 2009, so 3.5 years.
