Dr. on call not really helpful...

I have a had what I can only describe as period-like cramps since yesterday. Everything else is fine...baby is moving, etc. I decided to sleep on it & call this morning if it did not go away. I was up for about 2 hours (norm. grr) and other than that slept ok. Woke up with the same feeling, so I called. Dr. asked some questions and then pretty much said, "I am here in L&D all weekend, come on in & get checked out if you want to."

I get that I am certainly not an emergency, but I really would rather him tell me to come in or not to come in. I still have that constant feeling....I decided to go in tomorrow morning if it is still there. My friend seems to think I will go into labor before that. I am a RCS, so I hope not...but we'll see....

  • It would be dangerous and irresponsible of him as a medical professional to tell you not to come in (I imagine). If you were concerned enough to call why not go in to be checked out to ease your mind?

  • You guys make good points...Thanks! I just haven't had this feeling before with either pregnancy. I guess I was hoping he'd say.."nah, normal, you are good." I tend to overthink, so I was trying to stay calm. :)

are the contractions at all regular?  if I was in your shoes, I'd be timing things for frequency, length, and duration.... if they are regular, stronger, and getting closer, you are probably in labor.

Do they get better if you lay down or shower or rest?
No, this is like a constant cramp. It feels better if I sit. Have had just a few BH all day, very sporadic.

Does it feel more like a dull ache than any sort of contraction? I have felt like I am waiting for my period to start for at least the past week. Achy in the uterus and it wraps around to my back combined with inconsistent BH. I never had this with my first, and I'm glad I didn't because it is annoying and kind of a tease.

I've been experiencing what above described since Weds. Everyone or everything I've read has said that it's just part of our bodies getting ready for the "real deal." I was 1cm 60% effaced at my appt. on Tuesday. I'm interested to see if it's doing anything at my appt. this Tuesday. And I completely agree...I didn't have this with my first and glad I didn't.

I've had period like cramps going on for about half a week now. If I wasn't pregnant I would swear that my period was starting. I talked to my doc about it, and she said it's normal, and probably just my body starting to gear up for labor. I've had no contractions, nothing else going on except for the cramping, and since everything else seems normal I'm not concerned.

I'm planning on a RCS as well, and my doc said if I do go in to labor, I will just head down to L&D and they will go ahead with my c-section, no muss no fuss.

I can understand being frustrated, but I really think the doc gave standard advice. If you are concerned, go in. Even if it ends up being nothing, the peace of mind would probably be worth it.
All of this is exactly me. The cramping sucks especially because I was hoping to avoid any labor pains due to the RCS!

This sounds like me last week.  My period cramping feeling wasn't constant though, it was timeable and slowly got more intense as the day went on.  By 9pm I was having to pause through them, so just keep an eye on it.  Add me to team "I really wanted to avoid labor pains before my RCS too."  Wishful thinking......

  • Omg I feel you. I've been having contractions since 35w that even come in a consistent pattern. Like at first 5-6 minutes apart and last week 3 minutes apart. As well as yesterday 3 minutes apart. Since they don't intensify they keep sending me home. Plus I've had NSTs twice a week since 32w so I'm pretty familiar with the hospital now. If you can sleep thru whatever is going on its probably not developing into true labor. But seriously L&D are used ton labor checks and it may help you to see if they are in a pattern or not. If you're ever concerned it's worth going in.
  • Glad you plan on going in. Better safe than sorry and atleast your mind will be at ease afterwards!
  • Yep, glad I went in. The cramping feeling was a bladder infection starting, and the ultrasound showed that I have low fluid. They are keeping me overnight with iv. Low fluid tomorrow means little man comes early.

  • Good luck! Hope your fluid levels are higher this morning!

  • Still here... One more night. Fluid was better today but my blood work showed some something (I forgot right now, something is elevated) that made him want to get a 24 hour urine collection before I go home. He wants to rule out pre-eclampsia.

  • I think anyone would have given you the same answer.

I asked my Dr specifically at my last appt when I should call. I also will be a RCS. She said, to call after I have 2 hours of timeable contractions, that are getting stronger.
