I am a FTM and I have been EBF since day 1. We haven't had any issues with production but I am going back to work in two weeks and about a week ago I decided to start pumping to stock up on milk for those first few days of day care. I was pumping only about an 1 ounce to 1.5 ounces per session, and that is from both breasts combined. I decided to try fenugreek capsules and I have noticed that I can get 2 ounces per breast now in between feedings so I know it is helping.
Now my son has had tummy troubles (gas and whining/crying while trying to have a bowel movement) since 2 weeks. Recently though he has been crying like he is in a lot more pain than he was before. He would cry and then pass gas and/or have a bowel movement and then he was good. I felt bad though about the gas and he was staying up at night so we bought Little Remedies Gas Relief Drops (with simethicone). Since using those, his gas is crazy loud and excessive and I feel like the drops are pushing out what was stuck in his little tummy.
Do you think that the fenugreek could be causing my son's gas, or is it normal at this age to have a lot of gas? Like I said, he has had gas since before the fenugreek and I thought maybe I should stop eating dairy, but then it calmed down a little. I am worried that now the fenugreek is making it worse than it should be. I want to make sure that his gas is not caused by something I am doing. Please help!
Re: Excessive Gas Question
I don't know much about Fenugreek, but I thought I'd ask if you are giving LO bottles of your pumped milk at all? I've heard anecdotally that shaking the milk (people mistakenly do this when trying to mix the fat back in with the milk) can cause gas in babies. Also, just my 2 cents--I was getting about 1-2 ounces 8-12 weeks when I pumped after the morning feed so although it's great you were able to boost your supply I think your original output quantity is great!
