New Mommy Hair?

My friends have all asked when I am going to cut my long hair (it is half way down my back) and get the "Mommy Hair Cut".  I think this is just considered a variety of shorter hair styles.  I already decided to grow my bangs out, I don't make it as often to get them cut and constantly play with them to get them out of my face.  But the shorter hair wasn't something I considered.  I know the drying time would be quicker but if you already have children, is your hair style decided by convenience and time constraints?

Re: New Mommy Hair?

  • I cut my hair short right after pregnancy with DD but not because of her. It started falling out and looked shitty so I wanted to give it a fresh start. It is long again and I plan to keep it that way...unless the same crap happens again. Then I will repeat the process of "fresh start" and "growing it back out."

  • oh...I have been asked this question and I will piggy back with @YaMrWhite....I think that I am going to keep my long...cause personally throwing my hair in a ponytail is easier than maybe having to style a short hair style. My GF did cut her's off as well due to thinning after her DD was born.

I personally feel like changing my hair would just be more stressful..me trying to figure out how to fix it differently. UNLESS it did start to look bad from thinning and then I would probably cave.

My long hair also started shedding like crazy when DS was about 4 months old, so I got it cut shorter. The only problem was I missed being able to pull it back quickly in a ponytail or bun.. felt like it was more in my face when it was shorter. Also, I felt like I needed to pull out the straightening iron to make myself presentable before leaving the house, which took way more time.

If the same thing happens this time, I won't be going any shorter than shoulder-length.

Bolded is true for me too. Also, I work out a ton so I need to to be able to keep my hair out of my face and I like the secure pony tail for that so when I cut my hair I still make sure I can put it in one.

  • My hair is several inches past my shoulders, and I've never cut it off due to having a baby. Having an infant can be exhausting, but still find time to brush my hair. I don't curl or style it often; you might want to consider another cut if you have to spend lots of time on it now. Longer hair can be annoying when babies are in the grabbing and chewing stages, but it's not really a huge problem to move it back or pull it up.
As far as the post partum hair loss goes....yeah, it's a thing. Basically, you're not shedding as much hair during pregnancy as you normally do, so after giving birth, you will shed 9 months worth of hair within just a few months. You will have to clean out your shower drain daily, hah. So, yes, your hair will thin, but not to be thinner than it was before pregnancy. My hair never seemed noticeably thinner, although I knew I was shedding a ton.

I'm trying to grow mine out more right now because it's just to the point that it's almost long enough to stay in a ponytail.  When babies are big enough to start yanking your hair it can be annoying and could make you want to cut.  Also, long side bangs that hang in the eyes + nursing were no fun for me because I never had a free hand to pull those darn things out of my face.

I am hoping the post partum hair loss is different this time around. Last time I didn't shed at all during pregnancy but this pregnancy I have been shedding like normal so I have my FX that post partum isn't too bad :)

  • I'll cut my hair a little shorter around the time baby comes. Just to feel fresh, since I already know I won't be able to get it done for a while.

I've got long hair now, thick and naturally curly and it's such a PITA to keep up and do.
I almost always have it thrown in a messy bun to keep it out of the way.
I go back and forth on cutting short to style it and keep it out of my way, or keep it long. It's easier to just throw up if I don't feel like doing it.

  • I kept mine long with DS but cut it when he was a few months bc of shedding. I regretted it. It was easier to manage with it long- throw it up in a bun. My hair needs to be styled if it's if short so that was a bad move for me.

I won't be cutting it this time. (Unless my hormonal mood swings during postpartum drive me to it against my will haha)

I kept my long hair for a long time. I only cut it short a couple of months ago, and that was out of boredom.

I've had short hair for about a year... started with an undercut, then a pixie cut, then more masculine boy cuts. I'm growing it out a bit now, but can't decide what to do. It's fun having short hair. Less time blowdrying. I used to have very long hair (see my siggy pic which was taken just before I chopped it all off.)

DH prefers it short and wants me to keep it that way-- finds it very sexy. Which is funny because he was like "omg are you SURE? It's so nice long!" when I first told him I was cutting it.

I'm actually trying to grow my hair back out! I chopped it all off earlier this year to donate it, but haven't had a cut in a few months. I'm hoping it'll be back to ponytail/messy bun length by the end of the year. I feel like shorter hair that has to be styled every day is way more work than long hair.

  • I had and still have long hair. I think it's really up to each mom. I have curly hair though so short doesn't work well for me. I think if I had straight hair I may have cut it shorter by now.

  • I have 3 busy kids and one on the way and ass length hair . I just find it easier for those busy days a pony or those really bad days the messy mom bun ... U know baby has grabbed it all day its pulled out and hanging to the side lol. With short hair i dont have time to style it blow dry it or whatever else is invloved in short hair.. I assume some type of styling product?
  • I actually had 9 inches cut off in December that I donated and it was right below shoulder length and that is the shortest I have had it. So I have been growing it back out, I know it took at least 5 less minutes to blow dry compared to now. I want to say my husband will help with the baby when I try to get ready, but realistically I know this will not always be the case (he is self employed and the main income in our home).

My hair goes to about my mid-boob area, but I mostly wear it up.

I had it long still when DS was born, and it was fine.

I am planning on donating my hair in February, so that will be 10 inches gone, but it will still be long enough to put in a pony tail. One of my guy friends was like, "Whatever you do, don't get the mom cut." Short hair looks good on a lot of people, but I have a really round face and curly hair that would be Ronald McDonald style if short, so it wouldn't be a good look for me.
  • i had hair down to my ass for most of my life, until toward the end of grad school when i started going shorter and shorter, settling on chin-length for about a year.  (my hair is really fine.  super-long isn't a good look for it, turns out.  lol)  then i cut it down further to a layered, angled bob of sorts when i was pregnant with DS, and grew it out again after he was born because honestly, longer hair that i could let air-dry when i was sleeping and throw in a ponytail when i was awake was easier.  i was a single mom at the time though.  i've since gone back to a sort of disjointed cut that's a touch longer than chin-length in front (with layers) and very short in back that absolutely love, so i hope to maintain that as long as possible.  the front is long enough to pull back if i really need.

  • changed my siggy to a pic that shows my short hair. I'm leaning towards growing it out, at least slightly longer.
  • Its so much easier long, I doubt I would cut it. At most past shoulder length. Is currently to my waist.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I wanted to cut my almost bum length hair short (bob cut) or just cut it a little bit shorter maybe shoulder length, I want a fresh look before I hit the 3rd trimester but still thinking of the hairstyle. I got pretty thick straight hair which grows much faster than usual these days.
  • I cut mine to a chin length bob when DD was about 4 months. It's angular and more edgy than a "mom haircut," I think. I love it. Takes 10-15 minutes to dry and style versus my long hair, which took at least 30 (my hair is pretty thick). The only downside is that I have to blowdry if and can't pull it back if I'm feeling lazy-- which is good because I was rocking the ponytail almost every day beforehand.

I have a very short pixie cut and have for just over a year. I've had this same style off and on since High school and I love it and always go back to it because it's so easy. 5 min to wash, 5 min to style. Also a plus with a toddler running around now. I have no intentions on ever growing it out again :)

I cut my hair shorter after I had ds. But that was because I had a bad haircut and that was the only way to fix it. It was a little longer then chin length. I am growing it out now but definitely have the itch to cut it.
I have to say it looked super cute and it was so much easier to do. It took a couple mins to have it done and look put together instead of always having it in a bun on the top of my head.
I think thats why people always cut there hair when they have kids. It does make you feel good to have your hair look nice and its just easier for most people to do if they have short hair.
Its very easy to become frumpy when you have small kids and I think people just need to get out of that frump which is the reason for the hair cut!

All that said theres no right or wrong do whatever u like best!
  • I just cut my hair really short.  I've been so tired with the pregnancy, a toddler and a job (I know, poor me) that I wasn't ever doing anything with it. It looked like crap all the time.  The short cut takes about 5 minutes and has been a really nice change.

I lost a lot of hair after DS was born, especially along the hair line in the front.  With my long hair at the time, it looked like a really crazy mullet so I cut it short then too.

I'll probably keep it short until after the baby comes and, if it's not too thin, start growing it out in the spring (I'll be bored with short hair by then!).
  • I just cut about 6+ inches off my hair because it was taking so long to dry it and it's just too hot right now.

I can still pull it up, but I will probably let it grow long again over the next few months. Unless I learn how to style shorter hair, I prefer having long hair.

  • I have found that styling or blow drying my hair is on the "things I am too lazy to do" list. So post children I cannot imagine putting more time into it. It is just past my shoulders right now so it is easy to put up with a clip.

There are a few cases where I realized I should dry it because I need to look presentable. Cranking the air in the car on high and directing it at my head seems to do the trick.
  • My facial structure does not agree with short hair. I've had it past my shoulders for years. After C was born, I rarely found time to get it cut so it grew quite long. I find it easier to pull back in a pony tail. I have to have it back for work (when in the OR), so having it long enough to put in a low bun is perfect.

I ended up getting 6 inches cut off 2 months ago, but that's because I hadn't been in for a trim in over 6 months and it really needed it.

I am definitely jealous of those ladies who can change their hairstyles on a whim and still feel confident and look great!

  • I had to with ds because I lost so much hair I was getting bald spots. I donated it and haven't cut it since. This pregnancy I've been shedding more hair than normal so maybe I won't have to cut it again, it looked so bad and thin in the front that people would comment on it which would only make me feel worse

People would actually comment on it to you?! I can't believe how thoughtless/insensitive some people are.

Yup, nothing like feeling like you can maybe hide your balding spot and having someone say "wow you are losing a lot of hair!" As if I could do anything about it!
That's what also annoyed me when people alluded to the fact that all moms cut their hair because it was easy. I basically figured if I couldn't keep it, someone else could use it versus it all literally going down the drain.

  • I cut mine short every 5 yrs it seems. That's about how long it takes for me to get sick of long hair. I cut it after DD#1 was born and hated it! My hair gets greasy really fast fast and has weird waves in places so a short cut doesn't work for me. And I would rather do a messy bun anyways. I just cut it last Oct and kept it short but now I'm growing it out. Hopefully it'll be long enough for a ponytail by Jan.
