Pumping output dropping...

edited July 2014 in Breastfeeding
Hi everyone,

Is it normal for my pumping output to be decreasing? I used to get 18 hours a day and now i'm lucky to get exactly 15 oz which is exactly how much i need for the daycare bottles.

I haven't started trying to increase it yet because i was hoping it was a fluke but it doesn't seem to be the case. I plan to make some cookies tonight and might start pumping for 25 min instead of 20. Right now i pump 3 times a day for 20 minutes.

It's so stressful! My LO is 5 months old and I was really hoping i could drop a pumping session soon but now that my output has decreased, I don't think that will be possible.

If you dropped a session, did you find that by spacing out your two pumping sessions (vs 3) you pumped the same amount or were you only able to pump fewer times because you had an oversupply?

Thanks!

  • omg silly me! I forgot to think about the membranes! I'll change those during my next pumping session lol. Hopefully that's the cause!

My mornings are so insane that i'm not sure I could manage to pump before leaving. Plus I generally nurse my LO about an hour before leaving the house so that probably woudln't work as well for me.

Maybe the membranes are the problem! If not, i guess i'm going on an oatmeal diet !

  • Speaking of!
Mother Food has a lot of great articles on production helpers and inhibitors.

  • Around 8 months pp, I started to drop. I used to pump about 20 oz a day; now, it's 12. I pump on the weekends now to make up the difference for the week.
  • If it's not the membranes, it may be related to your period returning. Mine would take a hit the week before mine was due. Kellymom has info on taking a calcium/magnesium supplement for prevention of the drop in production.
