PIO injection timing

Ladies, I need help.
My husband and I can't decide when it would be best to give me the injection. The two options are either 5:30am every morning (I would go back to bed until 7:20 during the work week, or later on the weekends) or 8:00pm at night (my husband works late). I would dislike waking up early every single day, but I would also dislike having to pretty much cancel evening plans and worry that I wouldn't be very active after 8:00, which I hear helps. If the transfer works, then I will be doing this until the 10 week mark.

What would you do, or what have you done? Evening injectors, did you regret not doing it in the morning when you may have been more active for the rest of the day?

Re: PIO injection timing

  • I haven't done PIO yet, but I would think the evening would be better for me... for one, I would hate to wake up that early! I set my alarm to get up for my Lupron injection on days when I am not already up at that time, and sometimes it's hard for me to get back to sleep. I've also found that sometimes when I get up and go straight for the injections, I am not fully awake and it confuses me sometimes whereas in the evening I feel more confident about what I'm doing.

Would PIO injections at night really cause cancellation of plans? Of course not having done them yet I'm not sure how I would feel but I would look at it like just taking a short time out from whatever the plans were instead of having to cancel all together.

    Me: 32  DH: 33  Married: March 2004

    July 2006: started TTC
2008: HSG (normal), couple rounds of clomid through gyno
2008 - 2010: dragging my feet out of fear and procrastination
October 2010: first consultation with RE, dx PCOS and fibroids (DH slightly low count/motility)
Oct. 2010 - Dec. 2012:  In DENIAL! avoided the issue because I was scared of surgery
January 2013: returned to RE, fibroids grew significantly
February 2013: second HSG, fibroids pushed on tubes which blocked them somewhat
March 2013: MRI to determine what type of surgery may be necessary

July 29, 2013: fibroids (5) removed via robotic laparascopy
August 2013 - Nov 2013 : benched due to recent surgery

    IUI #1, Dec. 24, 2013, BFN
    IUI #2, Jan. 25, 2014, BFN
    IUI #3, Feb. 25, 2014  BFN
IUI #4 canceled due to lack of response to letrozole
    IUI #4.1 April 28, 2014, BFN

May 16, 2014: wtf consult, start prepping for IVF in June and add injects for one last IUI in the meantime
IUI #5 started letrozole and bravelle but canceled after HSG led to new diagnosis

May 21, 2014: third HSG, tubes blocked, one at the beginning, one hydrosalpinx??
June 11, 2014: consult, approved to move on to IVF because the hydro is not completely blocked therefore allowing fluid to move through slowly rather than backwards
    IVF #1 August 8, 2014 - 3dt of 2 embryos, BFN
September 17, 2014 - 4th HSG, the right tube is very patent (open!!) dye went straight through this time. Weird!
    October 2, 2014 - started metformin treatment
    November 14, 2014 - blood work, brought A1C down from 5.8 to 5.5

November 26, 2014 - RE finally back from vaca and reviewed my chart, no more IVFs for rest of calendar year
December 1, 2014 - Right after Thanksgiving, I called a new clinic and got in right away! Plan for IVF
    December 17, 2014 - ER! 29 retrieved (!!), 16 mature, all 16 fertilized (ICSI)

I did late evening and it worked best for me. I also just brought my PIO shots with me, if needed, and my husband gave me the shot wherever we were. Depends on if you are comfortable with that. GL!
  • Same for us.  We do the PIO before bedtime, around 10.  If it's a weekend and we happen to be out that late I pack a meds bag and we sneak off to the bathroom together.  :)

Once my hubby gave me the ovidrel shot in the car 5 minutes before going into a restaurant to celebrate a friend's birthday!

  • I only did mine for a few days but I did it in the morning so I could have to day to move around so I wouldn't be as sore, per my nurses instruction. One thing that I found useful when doing it in the morning is I got the syringe filled and ready at night. I laid it all on my night stand and when my husband got up for work I just rolled over in bed and he injected it in me.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • pblgepblge member
My nurses recommend morning injections bc it's less painful. Are you up for doing them yourself? Lots of ladies do, but I'll be honest that it was difficult for me. I've only done morning shots, so I don't know how much night shots hurt.

  • My nurse told me to do them between 8 and 10 pm. She said it didn't matter if it was at the same exact time everyday just so long as it was within a couple of hours. We aimed for 9pm but if we were out, we have done it as late as 10:30. Doing it that way sure hasn't effected my level because on 0.5ml my 7dpo progesterone level was >60 which is fantastic. I am pretty sore now that it's been almost 3 weeks but I think that's mostly because I'm on Aspirin so I'm all bruised up! I ice it before and use a heating pad after which helps a lot!

Movement/activity is supposed to help the meds disperse and avoid sore spots. :) I have a new theory, which is that the most important part is a super relaxed muscle during the injection.

My clinic recommended nighttime injections.  We do mine before we go to bed (around 10pm) each night.  I like the timing because (1) I don't have to wake up early to a shot! and (2) I don't have to worry about my plans throughout the morning/day/night because we are always home or getting ready for bed at 10pm.
