Shopping!!!!

I mean for baby. :-) When is a good time to start shopping for baby items? I don't want to wait until we have to buy it all at once because I know it's going to be expensive. I feel if I picked items here and there it wouldn't hurt and I could mark them off. Any suggestions or what have you bought so far. I'm itching to shop!

Re: Shopping!!!!

  • I think whenever it feels right. I would make a list of things that don't have to be specific. Sex neutral items. I would also look at deals that are being offered. I think it doesn't hurt to buy stuff like different sized diapers and so on. Plus, I'm keeping in mind what I could be getting at the baby shower! I haven't gotten anything and don't plan to until after our scan/wedding. We're on save mode right now. IDK much as i'm a FTM so I'd also like to see what others have to say. :)

We've started buying diapers in various sizes, however we need a bigger place before we can buy any more physical items. It was recommended to us to buy a gift card to places you will be buying baby stuff and each paycheck reloading the gift card or buy another. That way when you are ready to purchase baby items, you have plenty of money put aside.
    I like that idea :)

  • That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing. @angelg3134‌
  • My husband has created a baby savings account and treats it like a bill. Each month, he puts money into it so we have it ready when needed.

My MIL and mom's best friend have bought two gifts already, which are still in the bag and in a closet. I have recently gone through my teaching supplies and books that I have accumulated over the years. I can't use most of the books in my classroom, so I have a box of books to put into baby's library. Again, the box is a closet with the gifts from MIL and mom's best friend. I know a couple of my friends have already started buying gifts so they are able to spread it out over time.

  • You should start buying whenever you feel ready.

I already have some stuff but really nothing too big and most of it is thrift store finds.

Something to keep in mind with stocking up on diapers is that depending on your baby's weight at birth they might not be in the newborn size very long. Personally, if I recall we went through a box and a half (pampers biggest box) before moving up to size 3. DD was 7 lbs at birth.

Eta: my kid is not a freak, we moved up to size 1 not 3 from newborn lol

Thats true but you can always return the diapers to Walmart without a receipt if you get too many of one size.
Make sure the box is unopened and they'll let you return them. Even if you didn't originally buy them there. So even if you buy say 3 boxes or 3 bags of newborn diapers. Only open them as needed. Don't open all of them and try to put them in a diaper caddy.

  • I have a separate bank account set up for the baby fund. Then as things go in sale or we find good deals used we can use that money for everything.
So far we have bought the double stroller (used) and I am buying the car seat adaptors after our next payday also used.

My H and I created a seperate checking account for our baby also, every two weeks we add money to it, it's for things we'll need that we didn't get at the shower, stuff for the nursery, and we will continue to add to it and hopefully have a good balance saved up for the future.
  • We have a lot from our first son, but DH hates doing, or even talking about doing, anything baby related. He was like this last time, too. He is of the opinion that we will just get stuff when we need it, while I would rather be well prepared. We need a new diaper pail for DS and even that is like pulling teeth.

  • My youngest kid is 3, is it ok to use her gender neutral stuff (mostly the car seat) or should I buy new?

I say use everything you can that you already have. The only thing you may want to check is the carseats expiration date if you still have one. Other than that check for recalls and you'll be fine.

Like PP said, definitely check the expiration date and for recalls. My car seat expires in December of this year, so we'll need to buy one this time. We've used our car seat for our 3 girls (ages 5,4, and 11 months). I know DH isn't going to be thrilled having to buy another one, but I refuse to use an expired car seat. Safety first!

  • Psh, if it's a boy, I am only getting a double stroller, 2nd pack n play, and diapers for this one. We have saved everything possible from number 1. If it's a girl however, I'm going girl clothes crazy! :)

My bf doesn't want me to spend a lot until the shower. Because he thinks I'll be overwhelmed with everything but I did some online shopping while he is out of town. It's my first baby! I had to! Haha
  • We didnt buy anything with our first until after we found out the sex around 16wks, and that was pretty much just ordering the furniture and maybe a couple small items.  We waited til after our shower (30wks, and i recommend having it at this time) to pick up anything else we didnt get

With baby #2 we were able to reuse all the big items (swing, bouncer, baby tub etc), and since he was the same sex reused all the clothes. We pretty much just bought his baby furniture, diapers, and a 2nd video camera for our monitor. Oh and a double stroller..

With LO#3 we arent buying anything til after we find out the sex, though i'm trying to convince DH to be Team Green. S/He will be born in the winter whereas our sons are summer babies, so we will likely have to buy all new clothes, and obviously a crib set, but we can still reuse the swing and other big items there. Will probably ask for diapers and formula for Christmas lol

I think asking for Christmas gifts for baby is wonderful. DH and I get so annoyed with our parents and how much they spend on us adults. This year I really am going to say if you want to buy us stuff here is a list of what's left for the babies. I would rather have baby items instead of expensive kitchen appliances and random gift cards we won't use. Thanks for the idea @Mommy2CB‌
  • So DH woke me up today actually requesting we look at baby stuff. I got dress and hauled ass lol.
We walked around buy buy baby debating on cribs. We know what color was want and narrowed it down around 3 differents ones we liked. He also found a nursery set he liked for if its a boy. I have no issues with him picking out a boy bedding set since I already saw I like that one online. You know its meant to be with your DH when you secretly pick out a nursery set and then your DH picks out the same one on his own.lol

I also picked up a sleep sack that was baby blue with a racoon on it, a bumgenius diaper, and a closet organizer thing that you put on the pole an it separates the sizes.

I figure with the racoon sleep sack since it was such a light pastel blue with white stripes I can get away with using it on a girl.

Then I went to target and picked out a plush blanket I love and a sleeper with an outfit and hat thats fox themed. I'm keep the receipt since it was all boy stuff just in case it ends up being a girl.

If you're going to find out the sex of your baby, I'd say then is a good time to start.

It's also worth doing lots of research for some of your major purchases (nursery furniture, pram) from now.
  • Hey that's a great idea sweets0022, I should have thought of that! :-)  I know we are having a baby shower in November so anything we will need we could ask for at Christmas. We also got test results that revealed we are having a boy but have yet to see it on the ultrasound so I'm a bit hesitant to fully purchase boy items so I'm sticking to neutral for now haha.
