potty training my daughter before baby #2

I tried potty training at the beginning of the summer with no luck, so I decided to wait. My daughter now seems more interested in it and will tell me after she has gone, so we have decided to try it again. Well it seems to be going okay but we are on day 3 and still having more accidents than success. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong or what, we praise her tons when she goes in the potty and we just tell her good try if she doesn't make it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Re: potty training my daughter before baby #2

  • We went the 3 day route; first2  days stay home and let her be naked from the waist down.  Also gave her a lot of water so she had to pee  a lot!!, !st day we had a lot of accidents, 2nd day only 1 accident.  3rd day we had her in underwear only (that she picked out on day 2).  No accidents.   We are stil using diapers for nighttime though.

Good Luck and just be aware that she may regress when new baby arrives since she will see atteention being given to the new baby.

  • That's what I'm afraid of because I am a SAHM and she is my only one right now. But thank you for the advice! I think I'm going to try it because we've been using both pull-ups and underwear and I think it might be confusing her even though we treat them the same! Thank you!
  • When is your baby due? I thought we were pretty much potty trained when DD2 arrived, but we ended up quickly reverting to 100% back in diapers. Maybe if we weren't running to the hospital so much after baby #2, it wouldn't have been so hard on DD1. Honestly, having 2 in diapers was easier for awhile, then being out with both kids and having to rush to find a bathroom while out and doing the whole bathroom process. It was almost a blessing in disguise. Just food for thought...

  • We also did the 3 day method...it's been 3 weeks and I can count the number of accidents he's had on one hand.  They key for us was that he understood he was wearing underwear vs a diaper and that if he went it would get him all wet.  He's a master at holding it though!  He is also still wearing diapers at night.

  • Sorry I'm still new at this and not in the routine of checking the computer :o)

@theresat858 We have been doing something similar to what you are doing and it seems to be working out better, I have been using underwear but it's the thin ones because the "potty training" ones do remind her of a diaper and we only use a pull up when she is sleeping or when we are going out because this past week or so has been a little crazy with the my B/SIL having a baby and me being the only one that wasn't more than 3 hours away. But with the week slowing down I will try to get rid of them! What do you do for nap/bedtime?

@JulesDiane Our Baby is due December 30 so we aren't planning on being out. (Praying for a happy healthy baby so we don't have too, but I know that doesn't always happen) So with the plan of staying in, I am hoping that it won't be too much of a problem! I have heard and read a lot about the older ones reverting back. I'm still on the fence, She is doing so much better now, I would hate to just put her back in diapers and confuse the heck out of her! But if she does revert once baby #2 is here then I'm not going to fight it, I will just keep them both in diapers till spring/summer when we will try again. :o)

Thank you all for the advice! It really is helping!!
  • For the 3 day method, are they waking up dry? My DD was dry for the most part before we started but once we started doing this she has been waking up with a full Pull-up. Even now that she is going more during the day she is still full at night. She even goes pee before she goes to bed. I even cut her off of liquids after supper (We eat around 5:30-6).
  • My son is not waking up dry in the mornings, but he does after naps.  I told him once he starts waking up dry for a while then he can wear his undies to bed...he is excited for that, but I think it will be a while.

  • We took a different approach. Most parents I talked to said the process took 1-2 months. We are on week 3. DD only pees in the potty. She wears diapers for when we go out and for sleeping, but she stays dry and tells me when she needs to go. At home, she wears regular underwear.
The "watch like a hawk" thing does not work for her and we had to quit PT once and wait for 2 months to resume it.

Thank you so much for everything! I think we are just going to stick with what we are doing (which is combining a little of all of them) b/c right now it seems to be the best way for her. It's just taking her a little bit and she is still young (she just turned 2) but wanting to do it. We are having way less accidents and more success but still having accidents. Like you said acbfreire the "watch like a hawk" method isn't working for her so we are just combining all the methods and doing what works for us :o)

Thank you all for the advice! Definitely gave me a new hope and some new ways! I really appreciate it!
