TTC After a Loss

Question --- What was your first cycle with your RE like

I had my 2nd monitoring appt today and my follies hadn't quite grown the way they would want, but they also weren't sure if maybe I had ovulated because I had free fluid... they tested progesterone and I haven't ovulated so I will be triggering tomorrow night and BDing for 3 nights...  DH is all kinds of crazy in his head b/c he feels like this has been a weird cycle with them.  I keep trying to explain that the RE doesn't know my cycle and timing yet so it's a learning experience for them... DH is also unhappy that I don't get to see the doc on these follow up visits - just get told by a nurse what I should do.

SOOOO I'm curious... if you've seen an RE, what was your first cycle like?  Was it more of a learning experience or did you feel like it went smoothly?

Our first cycle with our old RE was a cluster, it seemed like there was a lot of communication issues between the staff and the doctor and I was really, really frustrated when no one seemed to be listening to me about what my cycle is usually like. As a result, the planned IUI was canceled because I had already ovulated when they insisted I come in for a follicle check on cd14. The next cycle was somewhat smoother, but mostly because they just insisted I take all these meds, injections and trigger so it was all timed to their liking. We ultimately conceived that second cycle, but that was also our loss. We met the actual RE on our first appointment and then never again until our heartbeat appointment. Everything in between was managed by the clinic staff. Things continued to be a cluster with that office and took a turn for the worse in their poor handling of our miscarriage so we actually ended up getting a second opinion with another RE and feel a million times more comfortable with our new RE. Our first cycle with him was a planned natural observation cycle so he could "get to know me" without meds and determine his plan of action, everything went well that cycle, we were even able to do an IUI. It didn't work, but even so, we just feel in more capable hands with this RE because he is so hands on with our case. He is at every appointment and has been wonderful with putting our TTCAL worries to rest. I would say that if you still feel uncomfortable after this cycle is over that you have a conversation with the RE and/or seek a second opinion. You have to be your own advocate. Good luck!!!

My cycle went smoothly but I am not on clomid. I do think they are still learning your cycle and reaction to medication. I have been doing let roll because of my pcos. My first cycle my monitoring appointment was with my RE. The second I was on vacation so no monitoring. This cycle my appointment falls on my RE's day off so I will see another one. I do speak to the nurses more often but I have email communication with the RE. This is my 3rd cycle and will be my first trigger shot. FX this cycle goes well for you.

  • I didn't see the RE at all during my first 2 medicated cycles. I saw a nurse and ultrasound tech at each monitoring appt, and a nurse did each of my IUIs.
The RE was available, of course, but I'm really comfortable with the other staff

In regard to knowing what was up with my ovaries, I didn't really feel like it was too much of a cluster, other then getting near over stimming, which happens with injectables

    4 Losses (2003, 2008, Apr 2012, & Oct 2012)
All RPL and IF testing with multiple REs = normal

    5 IUIs = BFN

    All AL are welcome

  • My first cycle with my last RE was a disaster. I was on femara and only saw the doc once, then saw the nurses and played 'telephone' with them and the RE. Basically, she had cancelled my cycle after 18 days because she didn't think I'd grow any follicles. I had tried to explain that I typically have 45-60 day long cycles and don't ovulate that early, but it didn't work.
My second cycle with her, again, I didn't see the docs or nurses, but I refused to take the provera and cancel the cycle after 18d. I finally grew a follie at 27d and that's when I got pregnant (didn't end well, but RE had wanted to give up on the one follicle that ended up getting fertilized).
I just started up with a new RE after I moved, and it's a 180 difference. HE actually sees me during every visit and talks to me. HE does my ultrasounds. He actually even gave me a ton of samples for injectables since he knows we're paying out of pocket, so I think he saved us about $600. So, even though my cycle this time turned out to be crazy (IUI converted to IVF), I'm really not upset about it since he went through all my options with me and really involved me in the decision making.
So basically, point of this, is to say that its really important to find an RE you like and that works in a way that you are okay with. GL!

  • My RE is a part of every step in my cycles. He draws my blood. He does my sonos. He calls me about my results. Sometimes he even makes my appointments. If you are not happy with your RE I suggest moving on when you can. The reason you're going to an RE is so you can be more monitored than if you were with an OB. At least that's my opinion. GL!

My monitoring is always done by the nurses. Then the RE reviews them, and gives the nurses the instructions to give to me via telephone. However I can see my RE at anytime if I hang around after monitoring.
