Baby/Memory Books for older children

I have had my eye out for a baby book for DS2, not because I was terribly successful with filling out DS1's, but because I know I'll feel guilty if it's not something I invest in with all my children.  DD asked what I was looking at on the computer, and then she asked where hers was.  She doesn't have one.

((Bit of a backstory: DD is actually the daughter of DH's ex.  Bio mom overdosed (she survived, but has only 30% brain function and needs around the clock monitoring), and Bio dad was in prison at the time (and in and out ever since).  DH has been taking care of DD since she was 9 months old, but we didn't get legal custody until she was 7 or so, around when we got married.  DD knows all of this.))

We have lots of pictures of DD from the time DH took her home to now, but we have no records of her first haircut, first tooth, when she started to crawl, and all the other general stuff that goes in a traditional baby book.  I had this brilliant idea to make her a book with all our special memories of her to give to her when DS2 is born, but I don't know what route to go.

Shutterfly?  I've never used it, so I don't know about costs, how easy it is to design, if I'm allowed to add lots of text, etc..
Traditional scrapbook?  I like the idea of picking out a really cute album and that she or I can continue to add to it, but I have exactly 0 supplies, and I'm afraid of the time commitment.
Something else? I'm really clueless as to what's out there!

  • That is the sweetest story ever that you want to make her one. So sad to hear about her bio mom and dad, but I'm glad she has you and your DH.

Personally, I like Shutterfly and you can find lots of coupon codes on the internet to get books cheap. Adding text and personalizing it is pretty easy from what I remember.

  • Scrap booking doesn't have to be that time consuming. You can just get the paper, with the photo tape, and some stickers for decoration. Write in your own captions to make it personal if you wanted. There's really no need to go all out with it as far as buying all the special scissors and boarders. Good luck :-) I'm sure she'll be thrilled with what ever you spend the time on making for her.

  • That's a great idea! I like shutterfly or snapfish. I like photo books over scrapbooking because they have a cleaner finish and pieces won't fall out. I believe snapfish will add to the album later on, but I could be wrong. You may have to send it back. Otherwise you can always have a second book, third, or forth.

  • I just made one for DS on Shutterfly. I had a coupon for a free 8x8 photo book from the grocery store and just paid shipping. You can customize it yourself or just have all of the photos placed automatically. The hardest part is getting them all uploaded, but at least they are stored there when it's all said and done.

Your DH sounds like a really amazing guy! It takes a strong man to raise another man's child. I call one of them dad myself.
