LOs with little to no teeth?

DD is just now getting her top front tooth, this is her second tooth (she has one bottom tooth that came in a month ago).

I keep seeing these food threads and wish DD could eat all of that food! She just isn't that great at chewing, I'm wondering if it's due to the lack of teeth?

She can chew soft fruits, veggies, Cheerios, cheese, etc. but she cannot chew chicken, tuna, or even ground meat. We've never tried sandwiches because I'm worried about her not chewing. Anyone else in the same boat?

Feeling lonely out here in almost-toothless land!

  • The chewing teeth are the molars and our LOs are all just maybe starting to get those but they've been able to eat all this stuff for a lot of months :)  Those gums are amazing at mashing food so don't hesitate.  The only thing I'd shy away from with lack of molars are whole nuts and probably raw baby carrots - that's it.

My LO has a couple of teeth, but for things like chicken, meat or sandwiches she doesn't really use them. She uses her gums (where molars would be) just like adults eat. She prefers all her food cut up into small pieces so she can just pop a piece in and chew with the back of her mouth. She only uses her teeth when she needs to take a "bite" out of something, like a cucumber or pepper slice.

+1. Benjamin only has bottom 2 and one top, and he just got those in the last couple months. He'll occasionally eat a sandwich cut into triangles, but usually prefers ~1" squares. He's always just gummed everything.

  • I don't post much at all. But read most when I'm free. My son eats everything using his good ole gums. Still have no teeth or sign that their around the corner.
  • She does mash a lot of stuff with her gums, but mainly has trouble with meats. She sort of chews it, but then "pockets" it on the roof of her mouth. Scares me to death!

  • Maybe its not so much the lack of teeth but more so the texture? My SO's cousin's little guy was late getting his teeth but he had trouble with breads. He'd do the same - chew them for a bit but not eat it. He didnt like the texture and still doesnt.

My LO has a few more teeth than that, but he doesn't have his chewing teeth (molars) yet. He still eats lots of stuff. He just chews it with his gums. You'd be surprised how effective the gums can be. Really, he mostly just uses his front teeth (that's all he has) to tear.

ETA: Also, in regards to the meats, try stewing them in sauce to make them softer.
  • Good ideas, thanks everyone!
