Ultrasound and baby is ginormous!

I'm high risk because of a blood clotting disorder, so I get frequent ultrasounds. Today I had one and holy baby, he is BIG! I'm 28 weeks, so he should be just above 2lbs, and he's measuring in about 3lbs 9oz!! I tested in normal ranges for my glucose screening, but my high risk Dr. wants me to retest in a month if after the next ultrasound he's still measuring so big. He's afraid I might have late onset diabetes. Eek!! Baby needs to slow down a little!! I'm terrified of having a HUGE baby!! Anyone else have/had this issue?

Anyway, attaching a photo of little squish's face just because I want to =)

Re: Ultrasound and baby is ginormous!

  • Super cute!  U/S are notorious for being off on weight estimates so I think it is good that your doctor is going to reassess in a month.  Have you had a fundal height measurement taken?  Basically your belly should be about the same number of cm as you are weeks.

This is totally anecdotal, but with my first pregnancy, I gained so much weight the doctors were all "positive" I had GD. Nope - in fact, my OB's exact words were "Wow! You passed with flying colors!" So after that, they were all positive that LO would be huge. So I had a growth u/s done at 36 weeks and surprise...not huge. I gave birth to DD 10 days past her due date and she weighed 7lbs 15.9 oz.

I think it is somewhat normal for u/s measurements to be off +/- a pound. But only time will tell I suppose. Good luck!

  • Are you a FTM?  I've had two very large babies, no diabetes with either.  I had vaginal births with both - 5 hour labors each, no problem. I had an ultrasound on Weds. at 27 +6 and baby was 2 lbs 8 oz.  I'm convinced she's going to be huge no matter what they tell me she is now - I think I just make them big!  Like PP said, the US are known for being off on weight, so I wouldn't worry about it now.

  • I've been measuring 2 weeks ahead at every ultrasound, but this is the first time it was 4 weeks! I go back on August 22 and then every week after that. I've heard ultrasounds can be off, but by how much?? I'm glad I'm getting weekly ultrasounds at the end so, that we'll know a bit more!

And yes I'm a FTM, so we'll have to see!

I am being induced no later than 39 weeks though because of my clotting issues, which isn't something I was thrilled with but now I'm thinking it sounds better anyway =)

  • Congrats on the cute baby.  I have no experience of measuring ahead...yet.  Maybe there was just a sudden growth spurt that hit??
  • So cute!

  • I had an ultrasound today to follow up on babies kidneys at 26 and 2. Baby is measuring two weeks ahead and is weighing in at 2lbs 9oz! The ultrasound tech even said, "whoa, that's a big head!"

Congrats on the cute pic! My baby measured a week ahead at my ultrasound this week (68th percentile), but I think he'd just had a growth spurt. I'm a type 2 diabetic, so I've been watching my blood sugar closely all along.

  • US weight estimates are notoriously inaccurate and can be off by 16 oz or so.
I was told my babies would be huge based off mine, and DS1 was 7lbs 12oz, and DS2 8lbs 14oz. Not small, but not HUGE! I was also advised to have a c/s with DS2 because of his estimated head size (99th percentile), but had no issues delivering him vaginally at 40w.

  • Awww.. how cute! Don't worry so much. I was told I was having a 9lb baby and his chubby cheeks on my 4D certainly made him look like a 9lber. He ended up be 7lbs 11oz. I think he was 7lbs 5oz when we left the hospital and wore NB clothes for a month.
  • What a cutie! Hopefully he slows down in his growth.

  • My DD also measured very big (high 90 percentile) but no diabetes for me and despite being a 9 pounder she was born 4 hours after my first contraction.

  • Congrats on your cutie! I had a just for fun 3d ultrasound with my first at 32 weeks and the tech asked if I was measuring big or a diabetic? And I said no.. he was born 8 weeks later weighing 10lb6oz.. but ive never been diabetic, no excessive weight gain.. number 2 was 9lb 2 oz.. both were uncomplicated vaginal deliveries! You can do it! :)
  • I've never had GD, I just make big babies. DS1 was 9lbs and DS2 was 10lbs 11oz and both were very easy births. Good luck!

  • I always measure big dd#1 was 8lbs 11oz and dd#2 was 9lbs 3oz. I delivered both all natural and didn't even tear with dd#2. Just remember that unless you have a condition like GD your body will generally only grow a baby it can deliver.

  • my last u/s was at 26w5d and he was measuring 2 pounds 2 oz. I do have GD but I have only gained 18 at 29 weeks now. He said he was right on track.

I have seen some ladies be measuring ahead the whole time and then at the last u/s be fine and the opposite. You just never know..

#1 I gained 50 and was huge, he weighed 7 pounds 2 oz at 41.5 weeks
    #2 I gained 27 and he was 7 pounds at 39 weeks.

I am guessing this one will be 7.5 or so. I think your body just makes a baby it can accomodate in there.
