My DD turned 1 yesterday. I gave her some whole milk over the weekend just to see if she’d react to it and she seems to like it. However ever since then she doesn’t want to drink any breastmilk from a bottle/cup. She will nurse just fine, maybe a little less than normal, but she is also taking in more solids and more calories from the milk. She started a new daycare this week and since she hasn’t been drinking the breastmilk there I thought maybe it was something they were doing but she won’t take it at home either. It’s like she is weaning herself. I don’t want to stop nursing as I really enjoy the closeness of it and I know it is soothing for her too (even though her teeth really hurt sometimes!). So for those of you who have been through the weaning process, what does it usually go like? I’ve heard you’re supposed to replace one bottle of BM or formula with whole milk and gradually increase it to 2 servings, etc. How did this affect your supply if you only nursed in the morning and night? How did you handle pumping during the day? Just stop altogether, shorten the sessions, have 1 or 2 sessions? Did your baby sleep better at night after switching to milk? Thanks for your help! Oh one more question, I have several bottles of BM in the fridge that she hasn’t been drinking at daycare. They’re going on 3 days old now. Do you think it’s ok to freeze at this point or should I just toss them?
Re: Weaning
6am: nurse
10:30: pump at work
2:30: pump at work (was pumping every 3 hrs but this week cut out 1 session)
[DD gets BM or WCM at daycare at 9:30, 12, 3:30)
7:30: nurse to sleep
DD usually wakes up 2-3 times to nurse at night
So as you can see I'm nursing/pumping 6-7x/day which seems like a lot at her age. My supply has never been great so I try to pump/nurse frequently to keep it up but since she's starting WCM it's time to reduce. I'm worried about getting blocked ducts and going through major hormonal shifts so i want to do this gradual. Any tips?
